Raspberry Pi Quick Start Guide (element14)

With regard to Step 1 of this guide which is inserting the microSD card into the Raspberry Pi, it did not helpfully say "with a compatible operating system correctly loaded into this card" (I was caught out at first because of this omission ), although this guide had a web link for full installation instructions.
One other thing about the Raspberry Pi (which should not be difficult to implement in its boot firmware) is that it does not display anything on a connected TV or monitor if there is something wrong with the microSD card (not inserted, no OS found on card, incompatible file system etc.), even though boot errors are indicated by the LEDs on the board.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

it probably takes a bit too much code to init the gpu.

I just realized that the Elpida memory IC on the board was RAM only and did not contain Flash memory, and that the Broadcom system controller only had 32 KBytes of bootstrap Flash memory, which would not be enough to initialize the GPU and display an error message on the connected display (especially on the membrane connector for the display), but it would be enough to control GPIO pins for flashing error codes on LEDs or even a simple two-digit display.

it would only add a couple of $ to put a colour lcd display on it, but the pi is a bottom-scraping product for beginners.
once you use one, you want something like an ODROID C2
