HP laptop dvd drive powers on at startup then goes dead

hi

i have an older but good working hp laptop model dv9000

when i first power on the laptop i can hit the eject button on the internal dvd drive and the green light comes on and it ejects but at some point prior to windows starting the dvd drive goes dead....and no green light nothing and it does not show up in my computer at all

any ideas what the issue could be?
