    K6 vs Pentium

So....physically they fit the same socket (Socket 7), but they are not interchangeable?

Just curious. Came across some old computer stuff and the K6 was amongst a bunch of Pentiums and P2s. Bunches of stuff.

Can I upgrade my AMD-K5(TM) or Pentium motherboard to run with the
    AMD-K6(TM) processor?

Both the AMD-K5(TM) and AMD-K6 (TM) processors are Socket 7 bus compatible.
For existing Socket 7 motherboards, certain modifications may be
necessary for proper voltage setting and BIOS revisions. AMD continues
to work closely with its third party infrastructure partners (BIOS,
chipsets and motherboards) to ensure their Socket 7 compatible products
fully support the AMD-K5(TM) and AMD-K6(TM) processors.

Depends on the voltages and the bus speeds, I have a K6-2-300 that will run on a Gigabyte mainboard that will only do 75MHz, the bus speed is lower but I can change the multiplier to compensate. Also the Vcore and I/O voltage have to be configured for the cpu.

So it sounds like I would have to get the mobo info and see if it is able to support the K6. It runs the Pentium just fine, but when you pop in the K6, the POST starts, but after the initial first page, it brings up what looks like the onboard (good grief...CRS catching up with my old butt) ...uhhh....IDE controller and then it just flashes briefly and goes back to the first page like you just hit the reset button.

I was just curious. A coworker did this. I thought you could use either in the Socket7 board, but wasn't clear (the CRS thing again) on what else needed to be done to get the K6 to work. CPUs in question are Pentium 200 and K6-200. I suppose 6 of one half a dozen of another.

        Oh well....just curious.

Hey TC.....wanna know the stats on a ton of K6 chips????? :o
