yes the windows can be slimmed down nice. but care will be needed with the programs.

this one is 1gb/8gb actually.

still playing with the interface. really they nailed linux for basic users. so many people i know with only basic computing requirements would dig the so simple interface.

pity the wireless was so difficult for basic user to get working.

but i just deleted all the unwanted connections, set the one i wanted to start on boot and to be infrastructure and chose WPA and then after putting the passkey it was ok.

lol i was re-imaging the hdd to test the image i made and the eeepc bricked.
one change of trousers later and the chinese adapter with conversion adapter is dodgy. ran out of battery. whew

doing another build with nlite cos that one linked above was a bit spartan.
i hope ssds come down in price soon. after playing with the eeepc i want one for the hp.

Don't hold your breath: judging from price per gigabyte fall for usb pen key drives in last 3 years (double capacity for same money in about 10-12 months, this seems predating Moore law by 6 months ), I think we could afford a 64 GB drive ($600 at the present) for less than $100 in 2.5-3 years, hardly before.

shit i was almost completing install and uuh managed to exclude Greek from languages in the nlite build.

This is for keyboard layouts, but InstallHinfSection virtually allows you to install anything with a .inf index (mostly drivers with their oemsetup.inf, but some utilities too).
Anyway, what an hassle for getting a layout: ol' but good keyb gr wasn't enough?

i finished the install. everything was working except the sound drivers said some error on install but still working.

bios upgrade to 0404 fixed the fan which was on ALL the time before. Also i think made the led show AC connected now.

unfortunately the owner has gone overseas and cannot receive the on time delivery

summary of experience
its a nice little unit, the screen quality is good
i wouldnt like to install XP with minimal storage though, 8gb is probably best.
wifi, network, sound, camera, card reader all working fine
probably its best to get a 2 or 4gb SD card for the page file
screen is 800x480. This means not only is scrolling horizontally required for a lot of the web but the 480 is limiting for a lot of software like for installations and some options pages. So the asus driver has a task bar option to switch to 800x600 and scroll the whole screen with the mouse, if you need that. A nice touch but not a proper solution. This is all quite annoying but not terminal.
What is pretty terminal is the keyboard which is very small and not suitable for any heavy use.

The keyboard on the old VAIO picturebook on the other hand was not full size and not perfect but entirely possible for writing long reports on. The keyboard on the HP 2510p is full size and rather good. I think the ibm x series are the same. Still we are comparing models to the eeepc which are in a completely different price range.

The eeepc is also limited by lack of expresscard slot or sim facility meaning that any businessperson would have to use usb cellphone connection for mobile internet if wifi not available.

the ssd or whatever flash disk is inside probably has a limited lifetime. we are yet to see what that is.

so if asus intend to make higher models i think care has to be taken between choosing that or a proper ultraportable unless they put better keyboard and 1024xsomething screen. At the cheaper end its probably a real good buy for non serious travel use and indeed a project computer.

still i dont understand why ultraportables in general so expensive anyway. at least asus should be congratulated for offering a cheap ultraportable and indeed the interface was rather nicely done also for basic users.

You can disable it at all: a stripped down XP should survive with 512 MB of ram unless you start using resource intensive applications (say, latest Office ). You can sacrifice a SD card, but there is only one SD slot and is intended for exchanging data, not for swapping.

Small diagonal is even worse than small resolution to my eyes: for surfing I can't stare on less than a 10" at 1024x768.

Willa, you are expecting too much: is a small and cheap ultraportable, its adversaries are big smartphones and PDAs (same price, same use). It's not a business computer, though someone may be attracted from its price.

Ultraportables = niche with a lot of compromises.
Small screen for small dimensions; smaller screens are produced in low quantities so they cost as much as a 15" one or even more.
Small dimension -> small keyboard -> not for typists
Lightweight -> higher quality materials (Mg and Al alloys) and small battery (the smaller the battery, the fewer the weight).
Small battery -> small capacity -> low power devices in order to have a decent autonomy (around 3 hours).
Low power devices -> smaller productions and higher prices.
Total: high price for a small computer.

12 and 13" notebooks should have lower prices since they usually differ from a 15" only for the screen. Here buyers jump from happyness if they found a 12" portable for less than 900 euro

this hp is pissing me off. what it was doing since new is making word not responding every so often. so today i try open office and actually it was also making writer not responding.

firefox i use for hours and ok.
any apps i can use to troubleshoot this? wonder if its some driver.

Make sure your hp is virus and spyware-free: donwload a free antivirus (Avira is my favourite) or a trial one and check, the do the same wth Spybot and AdAware Free.
After checking (and cleaning if necessary), download Process Explorer from MS Technet (formerly Sysinternals): it's an enhanced Task Manager (maybe even too advanced). Run Process Explorer, open View -> Select columns and check CPU usage and Context Switch Delta (for CPU intensive apps), DPCs (bad drivers hanging system usually call a lot of Deferred Procedure Calls) and I/O Read and Writes Delta (apps reading and writing to disks). Then run Word / OO Write and realize what apps do interfere and how.

i see they have a new version eepc here (well, new version for here...)



Eee PC 900-WF016X White
It has 1024x600 display, the full width also 8.9" diagonal
16gb ssd and 1gb ram. with XP home.......
i guess it would cost a lot though.....nope 329 euro......

dunno if it has bigger keyboard, i read the 904, 905 and 1000 have bigger keyboard as they use the 10.1" case????
