Dell Studio Slim 540s - disables hardware when Windows 8.1 updates are available

Despite the latest BIOS installed (release notes state that it adds Windows 7 support), I find every time when Windows 8.1 finds new updates, certain hardware components are disabled (e.g. devices in PCIe x1 slots and onboard 1394, but did not affect the keyboard, video and mouse) but are re-enabled every time when the latest Windows 8.1 updates have been applied.

Has anyone else experienced something like that?

Nope, whilst most of my customers are on 7, I probably support about 30 Win 8.1 PCs. I'd have thought i'd have has at least one call if this was an issue, but nothing.
Also nothing on the other forum I'm a member of, granted it's education based, but the user base is massive.

The only Studio Slim 540s i see on the Dell site is from 2009, whilst there shouldn't be any issues installing Win 8/8.1 perhaps there is ?
