My server is driving me COMPLETELY NUTS!

Okay, ever since I made a dedicated server I have been driven nuts by accounts and passwords and software.

I have a Proliant 1600 and with it was a burned copy of a utility cd that you installed and included drivers. I installed it and while it did install the drivers almost all the programs that came with it didn't work right and fifteen minuets after I had rebooted the server (following the install) my system logs ere packed with errors and corruption that in some cases didn't even exist.
I then uninstalled the utilities but to my astonishment, some of the programs remained and continued to flood my logs. One of them being "NIC agent" and you couldn't remove them now because windows could not see it.

    The second problem is accounts.
I have the one admin account, an account for my Hamachi connection and accounts for other systems (linux, unix etc.).
The problems there can range from the systems refusing to retain connection passwords (you check "remember password" and an hour later you have to login again), to security settings not working (You prevent an account from writing to a drive but it will let you do it anyways) to mystery accounts (my laptop wants me to login to an account called "IPC$" and it has a mystery password) and systems which refuse to login to accounts stating that either the account selected does not have specific rights or the account does not exist.

It's driving me and my friends nuts and I can't seem to figure out what's doing all this.

What should I do? Please, I'm desperate.

Windows 2000 Server. It's fully updated and was freshly installed this morning.
My error log started to flood and the system became slower as soon as I installed the utilities from the Compaq cd. I have always had the account problems.
In one case my mac can use the guest account to browse the entire server and I disabled the guest account.

Remove the compaq utilities. They're OLD if they came with the server anyway. Install nothing but the essential drivers for any hardware. As old as that system is, Win2k should have embedded drivers for the criticals anyway. What's the role of this server?

I did uninstall the utilities but some crap remained behind and according to the system it's not installed and does not exist (but still belches out errors).

The system is a central file server that connects together Linux, Unix, Windows and Mac system with a wide range of versions. It also has a camera server and is a print server and eventually it will be an FTP and mail server. It also manages all the X10 modules in the house.

I'd say its time for a clean install then, or a detailed cleaning of the registry....... Uninstalling all their crap probably left tons of startup commands in the registry for files/services that no longer exist. Windows 2000 is a very streamline OS if you keep on top of it. Using it as a lab rat for different utilities will slow it to a crawl come uninstall time. Of course, experimenting is good, once you find the sweet spot of programs and utils you'll actually use, then do a clean install with those programs and utils only. After that, just keep the OS updated, and as a win server, it'll run stable forever!

That system will have its hands full with duties... That's the dual P-Pro 200?? I hope it has a big enough pair of kahonas!

No, it's a dual PIII system.
              *sigh*
Okay, well it looks I will have to reload the server next weekend.
