Awesome Gadget review: Micro PCIe to USB adapter

    Mini PCIe to USB adapter:

For some reason this isn't listed on the company's main site... but it's IMHO an awesome product that I'm surprised nobody else makes. What it does is tap into the USB connection present in a PCIe slot and turns the slot into an internal USB port for stashing "micro" USB devices (mouse dongles and tiny flash drives mainly). I bought one a few months ago to stash my logitech Unifying adapter in one of my Dell Latitude E5530's extra slots.

The only "issues" I had was that (1) one must use a set of side cutters to trim the PCB at the row of VIAs; one cannot snap them by hand (the board will break further down) which limited me to the 1/2 slot, which became (2) a situation where the Unifying dongle was too long (I had to remove the plastic back shell and file the dongle PCB down to the antenna trace). However, in most cases this isn't an issue as the "shell" the card fits in on this design was an unusually tight fit to begin with.

I just bought two more for my other two laptops with extra slots; these are PERFECT for later Dell D series latitudes (and similar designs such as my XPS M1210), which have extra full size slots for WWAN cards that virtually nobody had to begin with or still uses. A lot of other laptops have extra slots I bet, and with mouse dongles (especially the logitech unifying ones) being "set and forget", I am surprised laptops don't have internal USB ports in the first place (as there is no reason why such dongles "need" to be external).

Price wise, IMHO it's pretty cheap... For less than $10 and with reasonable shipping rates, I'd rank it as a "must have" for those with laptops with an open slot and a mouse dongle (or other small USB device).

The first shipping option is 42$, at least to me it shows up a second option for $9.45

        It's interesting adapter otherwise.

^Having checked a handful of European countries, there is indeed a $9.45 second option.

          Not if:

          1. You dual boot (you have to re-pair every time you switch OS's unless you copy keys, which I have never gotten to work)
          2. The mouse you want isn't BT or doesn't come in BT

Both are true in my case. the only decent (read: not shitty gear head brand) 5 button mouse I know of in BT is the Microsoft 8000 wireless (the one with a laser pointer and presenter buttons on the bottom) and at $30 for a beat up used one (NOS ones are very expensive), not a good choice. Also, all 5 of my laptops are multi boot (Arch and 7, one has XP as well).

However, Logitech unifying does support quite a few nice mice, I use the M705. Not to mention it's good for up to 6 devices (If they were cheaper I'd also grab a wireless keypad). And they multiboot very well. However, AFAIK logitech doesn't make an internal (mini-PCIe) unifying adapter, so this is the next best thing.

as it's a pci bus, they should make one with a usb chip on it with 4 sets of pads to connect devices.

Sorta. Due to space it just uses the one USB channel on the mini-PCIe bus with a boost regulator for the 5V supply.

They do make a 2 channel one but is far bulkier (no good for stashing a dongle in a laptop).

Re: Awesome Gadget review: Micro PCIe to USB adapter

                yea, that's better.

i cant see an issue stashing a few dongle pcb's in most laptops.
if it was an RF dongle i'd try to put it in the lid anyway to boost range.
asus does that on some laptops with usb wifi adapters, they put the adapter in the lid instead of running lossy antenna cables.

Yes, I've never had an issue. The idea of this is cheap, easy, and effective. The second device was more for lid mounted devices (webcams mainly) and while one could use it to lid mount an RF device, if one has a metal lid (like my three that have/will get these adapters), there will only be if anywhere a single place where an antenna will function (in the case of my 3 dells, a plastic strip in the top of the lid).

My Asus X83V had an option for one stock... I'm all for laptop mods but this review is about "not modding" and not having to go to that kind of trouble... sometimes it just isn't worth the effort and that's what this product is good for.
