    Re: Supermicro curse strikes again

there is, i cant remember the detail but there is a header.
i remember from doing some bios ripping.

something relating to winphlash, it may be data to pre-load the cmos.

The bigger question is how to convert it into something uniflash/flashrom can use...

maybe you can load it into winphlash and then save it out again as a bin?

            found a pdf.
it makes a reference to command-line mode.
and an option to not flash the bios but to save the bios "code"
            hmm.

gave things another go, no dice. This time I tried copying the bootblock from the bootable chip to the intel chip, gave verification errors and still no boot.

Topcat, if you still have your X5DAL-TG2 running, if you could run uniflash from a dos floppy and have it write the bootblock to disk (under the advanced submenu), and attach/email me the .boo (zipped or raw), things may be better over here.

It's also possible I have a dud chip, this one was desoldered from a gateway rebadged p4 board.

the only one I have left is my shipdesk computer, which was built from a new hotspare board I had based on the old Big Mama hardware after I stripped it and gave you the board out of it. I had 3 of those boards for servers way back when.... Its in an antec solo case and no floppy.....so I'll have to dig it out and see how horrible it will be to plug a floppy in, the case is packed pretty tight....scsi ya know...

                  No USB floppy?

If it's too much trouble, then never mind... I may see what the going rate for these on ebay is...

edit- put a bid on this:

                  http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUPERMICRO-S...torefresh=true

I'll probably be outbid but if not, IIRC they use the same BIOS image... and before you ask, the x5dal's are still $100+ a board...

I dont have one........lol... Go figure. I almost never use floppies anymore. You can get the BIOS chip from supermicro I'm sure, a lot cheaper than another board. Glad a board this old holds its value that well. Apparently not easy to find.

Scored for $51 shipped... If nothing else I have another board lol.

But last I checked supermicro wanted an arm and a leg for a chip, if they even had them. like $50 or so. Hence why I max bidded at $60.

Even if all it has is a good boot block, I can hotflash the chip into working... and if I ever find the original x5dal chip (I'm sure I'll find it someday) or the ebay chip that was the wrong layout and can't be reflashed (wrong model chip, bios program refuses to flash it) happens to work in the x5DAE, then I'll have another board and CPU's to play with/sell/trade/rehome.

I'll take 'em. Still have a couple 604 systems in my fleet, they do just fine.

Other than the lack of x64 (on these, later 604's had it), they're nice indeed... had I not made the jump to 940 opterons I'd still use it full time.

The E7525 chipset S604's supports x64, DDR2, PCI-e, 800FSB, and if you find the right board they also support the Paxville dualcore Xeon's as well. Not too shabby!

I scored that today.... The SM e-ATX case is what I was after and well worth that... When it arrives, I'll see if I can get the BIOS you need, the G and the TG2 use the same BIOS.

Nice. Same bios. Want to trade the mobo for my X5DAE I ordered? It's the same as what you ordered only EATX with 6 DDR slots and iirc more PCI slots. I don't have another EATX case so I only bought it for the bleeping Bios chip.

Edit- shit, the X5DAE has just one gLAN (iirc the x5dal-g does too?) and has on board audio and as a result uses a different I/O shield which isn't included...

Also, boot block writing isn't working on uniflash at all so a .boo is useless. My only hope is a fresh chip from either board.

I might consider it....too bad theres no IO shield with yours.... Let me see what I have to work with, and if this one I've got coming even works....but I'm sure the BIOS will be ok. listing says it beeps....but theres no GPU or RAM in it, so thats probably why its beeping. I paid $80 for it....didn't realize it didn't show that....but I was logged in when I copypasta'd the link.

My plan for that case is developing a supermicro system that will run my pair of paxville dual core S604 CPU's. there's only a handfull of boards that support those.
