Re: help on linux disro and wireless connection
Thanks guys now is too late to try those parameters cause went back to WinXP and had a hard time to reinstall win xp sp2 i guess this old Sony vaio is not even suitable for this Linux distros i tried lubuntu and it also at boot asked me for "Pio" or some like that.
well i gave it a try and learned some stuff.installing, uninstalling software ,but sometimes you can“t beat the old machine. At least i made a few distros ISOS on Cd for future testing.I also ended up swapping Ubuntu 12.04 for Mint14 KDE on other Pc.

Re: help on linux disro and wireless connection
Just download one of the compressed firmware pakages from here:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/un...table/current/
Put it on drive and copy it over to your Debian machine, in your home folder. Then, you should be able to just right-click on it and select "Extract". Then enter these commands:
Code:cd firmware
Code:sudo dpkg -i *.deb
EDIT:
It may error instead, because I see some non i386 files in there. Then just install the one you need:
Code:sudo dpkg -i firmware-ipw2x00_0.36+wheezy.1_all.deb

Re: help on linux disro and wireless connection
You must mean ipw2200. You will need to download the firmware and place it in the /lib/firmware folder (as root).
See this:
http://wiki.debian.org/ipw2200
To see what firmware it is looking for, enter this command in the terminal:
Code:dmesg | grep firmware

If you don't show a wireless option, then you don't have the needed drivers installed. If they are not open source drivers, Debian won't have them. This is the main reason most people become frustrated when using Debian.

Re: help on linux disro and wireless connection
If you are new to Linux, don't use Debian. Debian tries to be "pure Linux', whatever that is.
Use Ubuntu or it's off-shoot, Linux Mint. And, Ubuntu is actually an off-shoot of Debian. But it is easier to use.
Anyway, use the NetworkManager GUI to do the wireless configuration.
