Definitely scan the system for malware, especially looking for BHOs. Unless someone was fiddling with OS settings below the typical user interaction level, this problem shouldn't have occurred all by itself.

Internet explorer sucks, but it's not a virus.

I meant that it makes one more likely to find and get viruses...
