Capacitor plague in the late 80s/early 90s.

Some of you may be aware of bad batches of electrolytic capacitors made in the late 80s/early 90s.
They even turned up in vehicle computers: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...mitsubishi+ecu
The brands affected were Nichicon and Rubycon (I've seen units of this age leaking), and to some extent, possibly Matsushita and Elna.
In a Sega Game Gear, bad SMD electrolytic capacitors were found in the audio output section (Nippon Chemi-Con, if I remember correctly - even the best are not immune from failure).

Does anyone have more information on this plague?
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

Nothing to add, but thank you for adding a Google result so we know we're not crazy. I've found a few bad caps on early 90's Sansui speakers, maybe they are Nichicon/Rubycon. I'm just waiting on some replacements and then I'll get the old ones out and see if they are Nichicon or Rubycon and post back here with pics.
