A simple analog ohm meter won't tell you much except open, short, or an indication of charging by observing needle swing. A digital VOM is even worse since it will auto-change scales. Try using B&K Precision Model 815 Parts Tester designed to do the job.

To test capacitors....you need a Capacitance Meter and an ESR Meter. There are some instruments that have these 2 in 1. I personally have separate instruments. When using the Capacitance Meter you need to remove the capacitor from the circuit. When using the ESR Meter you do not have to remove the capacitor from the circuit, but I still remove the capacitor from the circuit as I usually test capacitance and ESR together. The capacitance may be good but the ESR is high and this may shutdown your circuit and usually when capacitance is not good ESR is not good also.Comment

Most of the information in this thread is bad. I mean, rly, the fact you have some experience does not always mean the reality is not totaly different.
ESR Micro has no problem measuring in circuit, the only thing to consider is that paralleling other (incl. small ceramic) caps adds to the capacitance, and substracts from the ESR. But when you know that things like "you need to remove the capacitor from the circuit" are just nonsense.
Most LCR and other funny meters, that's about 90% toys on the market, are useless for in-circuit measurement, that is true. Meters designed specifically for capacitors like said ESR Micro have no problem whatsoever. And I carry the v4.0si incl. worldwide shipping cheaper than that LCR toy posted here. Solution is to pick up the right device, not buy some shit and than spend half of your life removing components and testing them one by one out of circuit…Last edited by Behemot; 03-23-2017, 12:26 PM.Less jewellery, more gold into electrotech industry! This is my first attempt at troubleshooting a board like this, I know I could just buy a new board but I'm curious to figure out how this works. I've been testing different components in the evenings this week and I think the problem is with the IC failing to start up for some reason. When the board is plugged in there is no standby voltage.
Then today it randomly sprung to life like a zombie but shortly died thereafter. I have no idea why it would have done that and its the first time I've seen it running. I discharged capacitors on the board last night, then it was sitting today.... -
Hello!
I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.
I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.
I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
