• Re: Testing caps

A simple analog ohm meter won't tell you much except open, short, or an indication of charging by observing needle swing. A digital VOM is even worse since it will auto-change scales. Try using B&K Precision Model 815 Parts Tester designed to do the job.

  • Re: 2008 MacPro Memory Card Bad Cap

A unit from 2008 has reached the end of it's life so I would replace all electrolytic caps that are accessible.

  • Re: Possible Cold Solder Joints, Help to interpret photos ?

Judging from the large board traces and spacing, this looks like a Heath Kit or Knight Kit etched board some ham radio hobbyist threw together. If you suspect any cold joints, resolder them.

  • Re: dose anyone know who made these caps?

I wouldn't trust capacitors that old as they have a finite life. As they age, the chemistry changes so I suggest tossing them and buying new.

Just wondering, what need do you have for a floppy disk drive? Perhaps an older motherboard for flashing the BIOS?

Try Mouser Electronics in Texas. They have a huge stock and fast shipping.

  • Re: A question about false continuity.

To avoid false readings, capacitors are normally removed from the circuit. The best way to test is with a capacitor tester. If you don't have this item, then use an analog meter. The capacitor should slowly charge then reverse the leads and it should kick with that charge then charge in the other direction.

  • Re: Should I worry about Polymer Capacitor higher leakage current

Wow! That's really a good question. My gut feeling is that the original design called for electrolytic either due to a technical factor or if not that, to cut costs. If it were my sub woofer, I think I would replace all the electrolytics using the same values but boost the temp rating to 105C. Unless you have some special smoke & mirrors design, I would use the Panasonic NHG standard series....

You are right. Foreign or domestic, the main issue would be quality control. With the huge disparity of wages and standards of living around the world, many manufacturers have turned to cheap labor markets hoping their brand name will make it all transparent....

  • Re: Bought some capacitors but not sure if they are worth using

I'll throw my 2-cents worth into the discussion. In my opinion, buying electronic parts off eBay is kind of risky business. You have no idea where they were made and if knock offs or their age. My best suggestion is to take a look at MouserElectronics and into the search box type: electrolytic capacitors, leaded. You might pay a few cents more per unit but I've never gotten junk from Mouser. You can also buy in higher quantities than single units to get a price break....

  • Re: What Cap size fails most often?

The Japanese have the best reputation for quality control even though many are manufactured in low wage countries on their behalf. By nature of their construction and materials used, all electrolytic types are prone to failure. A lot depends on quality control during the manufacturing process and the operating conditions of the equipment. That's why most everyone who has been involved in the electronics hobby or repair prefer units rated at 105C. Also capacitor types designed for high temperature are available such as the Panasonic FC series....

Your opinion well taken. Here at the shop which has been in operation for the past 45 years, we stock the parts cabinets with items known to come from quality sources. That way, you don't have to dig in the junk box and test some used, old, dehydrated, or ONS part that might be twenty years old. I'd rather put my money into fresh stock than mickey mouse with an ESR meter. For applications that genuinely require low ESR units, the Panasonic FR series as opposed to NHG can easily be obtained....

I don't think anyone can name a capacitor manufactured in Europe or North America since the end of the tube era unless the Russians are making their own over in Moscow. You see, household wages have gotten so high with both men & women in the job market that low wage foreign competition from Asia has taken over. As for using Panasonic capacitors, the Japanese have a reputation for having quality control vs. poor or nonexistent in China. I've just noticed AliExpress has the Maste MS5308 for those seeking an inexpensive LCR/ESR meter....

  • Re: Replacement question

Buying a "capacitor kit" is a good starting place but as you gain experience you will learn how to select and purchase your own as the kits seldom tell who made the capacitors and some other important parameters. To select your own, you soon realize manufacturers have different types they call a Series. Take a look here: http://www.mouser.com/search/refine.aspx?N=12013592 By using the Filters "Enable Smart Filtering" you can quickly narrow down the available choices. When you run into a parameter you don't understand,...

  • Re: Could use some psu help

I would use a spreadsheet such as a free copy of Open Office Calc and make a new list with the following columns: Quantity, uF Value, Voltage, Diameter, Length, Lead Spacing, and Series. I typically use the Panasonic FR series available at MouserElectronics. Search aluminum electrolytic capacitors, leaded and then do the drill down....

  • Re: Leads on 25v 2200uf caps?

If I wanted to use higher voltage cap (provided there was room for them on the PC board) and the leads would not fit through the mounting holes, I would drill them out to make a larger diameter. To do this, you need a set of ultra sharp PC board drill bits and a miniature chuck that can hold them. The miniature chuck is then placed into the chuck of a normal sized drill. Then, you will have to drill into the foil side of the board so the bit don't lift the trace off the board as it pushes through. Once finished, your larger lead part should fit....

  • Re: I broke my creative sound blaster wireless transmitter

That circuit board must have really suffered some trauma. Those surface mount components are such low mass that they normally don't go flying off the PC board. For years, I've brushed over them with flux remover and tooth brush and have never lost one. But anyway, replacing a surface mount part would be very difficult as most soldering pencil tips are larger than the part. During manufacturing, the solder is already on the trace and a machine places the part on the board while a puff of hot air melts the solder joining...

    started a topic ESR Mania

    ESR Mania

I recently repaired some power & video boards found in Gateway monitors (built by Samsung) suffering with the capacitor plague of 2005. I had purchased a number of these years ago when they were being liquidated on eBay. Well, I guess "dumped" would be a better phrase since sellers who had no knowledge of electronics were in a panic to get rid of them since warranties had run out.

There has been some talk of capacitor ESR so just for grins, I included some of the Panasonic FR series in my last parts order to replenish my parts cabinets. The majority of electrolytics...

  • Re: Chosing new caps

When selecting a replacement in addition to capacitance & voltage rating you should (using a metric ruler) measure the diameter, height, and lead spacing. Then if you go to Mouser Electronics and search "Electrolytic Capacitors, Leaded" you can read the parameters to make your selection. The Panasonic FR series are low ESR while the NHG series are Standard....
