bad surface mount capacitors in vintage video gear?

i recently frequent a video forum that deals with video capture, editing, etc.
the admins/mods on that forum preach that old analog video gear has caps worn out from usage and one needs to replace ALL CAPS to fix the malfunctioning gear.

it's said that especially high end panasonic s-VHS VCRs need that treatment and the surface mount capacitors are the worst and first to fail. supposedly panasonic doesn't use their own quality components in their flagship equipment, but sources it from cheap suppliers.

i think this is a total BS and scam and they lie to steer people to their cronies who recondition the old video gear for only $200-$300.

am i right or wrong?

I've worked on a few of these Pansonic vcr's and the surface mount elec. caps do go bad, but I used a scope to track down the defective ones and only replaced them. If I was to start replacing all the caps that would end up costing way more than the unit was worth.
I always used sm caps if I had them but also used regular radial caps with the leads short to batch the sm ones. How much F'n R.F. are you going to pick up or radiate on those leads. NONE.

all smd electrolytics are shit - they used them because they are small and cheaper than tantalum.

thanks, i didn't know about the SMD electrolytics issues. personally i had only issues with larger electrolytics in PS or in PC MB.

you should see the mess inside untouched sega gamegear handhelds!
those use the first ever smd electrolytics that consist of tiny wire ended caps fitted into rectangular plastic frames!

Methinks Lelon was the one who supplied Sony with crappy SMD electrolytics.

Why do you think all SMD electrolytics are no good? Because they have a nasty habit of leaking from the bottom?
