    Re: p3 running HOT

i removed a hd, adn mounted the other in the second, inner bracket, the brackets have holes pre-drilled in them. the case fan is exaust so i dont fight the psu

im using linux, not windows as always, no changes- machine got left on login screen because my mom herded me out the door to lunch sooner than i expected

    linux= no malware

windows= slow antivirus or slow malware (pick your poison)

      Re: p3 running HOT

I think your computer is fine.. Having the heatsink get warm means it's doing its job.. If it's so hot you can hardly touch it, then i would worry.. As for GPU's, they can tolerate much more heat than a CPU can.. Right now, being as i'm in the same state as you, my overclocked GTX 260 core 216 runs at 65 C idle, and gets close to 80 C under full load..

what do you, know, the video card died

remounted the fan on a nvidia geforce 4 64mb card, fan moves more air over bigger heatsink and it actually works

                    ???

I use avira, its free, fast and very light weight. Pretty good running along side malwarebytes.

i use linux because no antivirus needed (unix-likeness makes it secure enough that writing viruses is a waste of time). the lightest antivirus is none at all

I use avira too, it seems pretty lightweight and speedy, and according to some magazine I read it has the lowest false positive rate or something...and it's free
                        but you're right - linux = no antivirus = faster = awesomer

the rich neighborhoods sell old stuff around here (or give it to children/friends/thrift stores) and when it is thrown out, you dont want it. i have yet to see a good one. its a college town here, so a lot of the rich are smart professors

besides, i have a spare emachine myself. p4 presscott lga775 (no ht though, its a presscott-a)

if i wanted to ditch the p3, i would. i like having plenty of slots, a case that allows faster drive swaps, and it matches my monitor/keyboard/speakers

i also have plenty of spare parts for it: extra ram sticks, another cpu, another mobo, etc. sadly, the emachine is the newest computer in my parents' house (my parents never needed an upgrade, so why waste money?) as a result, all i have for it is a couple ram sticks. no spare sata hd (thing only has one ide header)

the only new computer i own is my eee pc im using at this moment.

update: still runs kinda hot, would dried caps with high esr do that?

it seems that if one bad element of cooling was involved, then why is everything hot

and my bios/bootloader is slow as hell now

I've driven around our higher class neighboorhoods around here and scored some pretty nice machines.

One was a sony vaio with a p4 prescott 3.4ghz with a x1650 pro pci-e card, had no psu or hd or cd drive, but had 512mb ddr2-667.

Another was a dell precision with a 3.8ghz prescott (god that ran hot) with 1gb ddr2-667 and a 120gb hd. It was nice, just had no psu, no cd, and no video card. That was easily solved. Ran like a champion. Sold it for $500. That funded most of my computer purchases over the years, so I didn't have to hit my car fund.

The strangest was a compaq proliant server I found. It was completely working, but the owner disconnected the 4 18gb scsi hard drives. I reconnected them, and I guess this guy use to run a porn site or something because it was full of it.

                                  Re: p3 running HOT

if the system is stable, caps are good, and PSU is good, I think the problem is that there is no problem. I would personally use a good socket A athlon cooler with a copper base, lap the CPU, and some arctic silver, and you should be golden. It's normal for them to get a tad warm...

FWIW, my dual xeon would really toasty when it was rendering stuff in premiere.... toasty enough that you'd think twice before touching the heatsinks....never had any instabilities with it.

Speaking of dumpster diving, I scored a precision 470 dual xeon 3ghz with 12gb of ram a few months ago (had bad caps), and a member of this board gave me a precision 670, dual 3.4GHz 2gb RAM a few weeks ago. The 470 needed to be recapped, and the 670 had some bad RAM.... I love free stuff!
