Hot Air Soldering (SMD)
I'm reaching out for a little advise from anyone who does soldering using hot air. I personally have never done SMD using hot air. I have reballed chips and everything in the past using IR. Now, my question is what is the best solder paste/ flux to use for chips that have pin along the outside? I have a chip here that I would like to attempt to put back on but I'm not quite sure on what flux or solderpaste to use, and how much of it. If anyone has done reballing than you know it's like an art form and everything has to be just right. So looking at how close these pins are I would like to make...

Re: New toys!!!!
I had to go look at the books, I got it on sale for $69.99 so it's not too far off. How much did you pay for yours?...

Re: New toys!!!!
I have the same Radio Shack soldering iron, i love that thing! I have purchased a load of tips for it, that were from a Hakko I think. They fit but I can't get the bolt down real tight, but it works very well....

Re: New toys!!!!
No problem my friend EEVBlog and Dave is an EXCELLENT source of information...Hell, the video for the review of cheap hot air station was like 25 minutes long. He gets into some good detail and he's super knowledgeable! Checkout is other video blogs as well, there's a bunch of good stuff on there....

Re: New toys!!!!
Yea, I would say it is worth the extra $25, I wish I would have seen this. I would have liked an extra soldering iron. Nothing is worst when you have a tip on that you think will be perfect for an application and then once you start, you realize you should have used a thicker one or something like that. You have to wait for it to cool down. Instead you could just fire up the other station. DAMN! Wish I would have seen this one? Is yours 220 or 110?...

Re: New toys!!!!
I bought the one the has the fan in the wand. No, I didn't take any pictures( I didn't even think to). If you go to YouTube and put in eevblog hotair station (ithink it blog #167) Dave from EEVBlog takes apart his station and wand. This.video is what made me go with this unit rather than the one you're looking at as well....

Re: New toys!!!!
I was talked out of that, due to quality... honestly that one is a lot bigger as well and will take up precious space on the workbench. However it has a diaphragm built into the station not a fan built into the wand, which is a plus. Space was a concern to me along with everyone telling me to stay away from Ayoua (spelling) products. Not at all saying what I bought was the best, but it was an excellent pick for what I was looking for.

Re: New toys!!!!
I gave it a look over and it was grounded properly. Thanks for the heads up though! I was playing with that hot air station a little more, I did some heat shrink tubin, desoldered some SMT LEDs and did another IC for fun. I'm not going to lie, I'm a fan! I didn't think it was going to be as great as it is. I'm going to have a large surplus of SMT parts laying around the office soon... lol!...

Re: New toys!!!!
I thought it was WE'RE because there is that little arrow that comes down on the P making it look like an R in the logo. Any which way it's from China! Lol!
I would normally just use my heat gun as well, but the little attachments make it nice to control where the air flow is going and your not reflowing a giant area when your trying to just hit a single chip. As I said I have an IR BGA welder and sometimes I just hate going through the whole process you have to go through just to remove a SMT chip. It honestly took me 23 seconds...

New toys!!!!
So, this week I decided to take some of my hard earned money and buy some new toys for the workbench. I justified it by saying "you haven't bought anything for yourself in a while" and "you should get something for yourself because you got a better job now... you can afford it" also, "she gets to buy whatever she wants, get yourself something"... Okay, enough of my justification!
I got some SMOKING deals! I have wanted a function generator for some time now and not like they are that expensive but I was able to come across a guy who is an instructor at a local...Last edited by Peter9DO; 10-31-2012, 12:24 AM.

Re: Where to find broken LCD TV's in your area. Recycled Electronics.
Well, I know in NY it's against the law to put electronics to the curb. I'm almost sure every state has followed suit. Just check WM's website and see what they do for e-waste collection. Normally the garbage companies will charge you to dispose of items. However, if you Google, e-waste disposal in <your city/ state> see what that list gives you and either check out the their websites or call them you should be able to find somewhere.
The e-waste center I go to is about 20 miles from...

Re: Where to find broken LCD TV's in your area. Recycled Electronics.
Yea, when it goes to the recycler they won't let it go. You have to do whatever you can do to intercept the products before it reaches the recycler. I think my best pick was this guy who wanted me to pick up his his 52" Sony Bravia LCD that won't turn on. He said "if you will get it out of here, you can have it for free". So, I picked it up and got it into the workshop, took it apart and busted out the old DMM to start probing and boom! The fuse on the main input was blown!!!! I just so happen to...

Re: Where to find broken LCD TV's in your area. Recycled Electronics.
I use to get everything from local factories, they always have a large amount of ewaste. If you can give them a speal about how you are trying to help the ewaste problem and that you will properly dispose of all of their ewaste for free. If you're convincing enough they should be able to give you ALL of their ewaste and there are some jems in factory gear! Finding a buyer is sometimes harder, for the bigger price tagged things! But I have got everything from a lot of LCD monitors, computer towers, brand new wireless...
