The problem with those clips is that you are also feeding the (5or3) volts to the whole main board, and the usb port usually can't supply the current. The voltage from the clip is also connected to the cpu, memory, etc. not just the spi/eeprom chip

I have removed the chip from the board and it worked.

Sadly, I have damaged the pads on the boards when I removed it. I have used the hot air gun, done some practice on a scrap board, set to 280C, all fine.
When I moved onto the actual board, the chip would not come off like the solder wasn't melting. After increasing the temperature a little bit (320C) and keeping the air gun on it for longer time it eventually came off but also the pads and traces.

It was a good experience and I think I need to practice more. Looking forward
to the next project.
