found this set in the trash and it was a cheap but lengthly fix chasing an intermittant.
its a 28"lcd.
seems identical to the polaroid and akai sets.
need a universal remote thats cheap,easy to get,and of course can work all functions.
btw the megmeet psu had baked its capxon caps and of all odd things it had a bad solder joint on a ccfl tube.slap it and the backlight would go out.

If you want a cheap, reliable universal remote. I would personally recommend a universal remote that has a JP1 interface. Check out the JP1 forum for all sorts of details:

On the main website, there should be a list of remotes that have the JP1 interface. I remember that most "One For All" and a number of "Radio Shack" universal remotes have this interface.

A few weeks ago in Australia, ALDI was selling recent universal remotes for AU$18. Maybe the US have ALDI as well?

I know you said that the universal remote needs to be cheap, however if you change your mind, I have heard that the Logitech Harmony series of universal remotes are great.

found a harmony 510 for 57.00 shipped.
after 2 tries with a universal and a phillips i bit the bullet and ordered the 510.

Careful.

I have now confirmed 2 cases where universals "programmed" the TV into factory mode test! Happens also with satallite remotes also universals when customer tries to scan for a functional program instead of punching in code directly. Luckily I was able to undo one, but other one 2 years ago couldn't get service manual and got junked! :O

(Electrochrome if you insist to know) but same chassis is found in many generic TVs.

Symptom is TV comes on without your input at plug in and displays either "F" or "FACTORY" in red letters. And uncontrollable, must unplug to cut power.
