Samsung PS60E6507 plasma switching on-off

Samsung PS60E6507 plasma TV have been acting a bit lately. For some months, it was having HDMI drops but i thought it was bad cabling (my rip cat liked sleeping on avr tugging at cables). Two days ago it started having brightness and colour fluctuations (it looked as if someone was changing picture modes from calibrated cinema to game to vivid). I power cycled it, it started working ok.

Yesterday, it did not turn on. The TV started on-off cycle when it will make a sound like it's turning on then off, standby light will turn on and off, and so on. I've waited for some 2 minutes, and disconnected it from mains.

Today, it did turn on after some 5-7 power cycles, and worked normally for less than a minute, and then again went into an on-off cycle. I measured VA and VS, and VA is exactly as it should be while VS is spiking up to 60V on switching but stays at normal 55V while the TV is working normally. At off both voltages drop to zero.

I looked at caps and see two highly suspect caps on the main board (pics attached). Should i replace them? I don't understand these markings.

Mfg. date is 2012.05.07 so i assume it's a 2012 model.
How can i check it?

I checked standby and pson voltages as per http://youtu.be/JjrwTZC5nVg video. Both are Ok, at 5.31 and 3.33 . Moreover, TV powered Ok and worked for 2-3 minutes while i was checking the voltages. LED was blinking at normal rate. So my problem is intermittent. How do i do i check it further? Should i wait for tv to malfunction again, or try to turn it on/off in quick succession?

You'll need to remove the stand bracket to see it, but underneath it there is a controller board that a lot of things connect to. Can you see if there is an LED on that board? If so, does it go out when the problem occurs, or blink slowly (once every 5-7 seconds) or does it blink continuously (about once a second)?

I switched the TV on, it was working Ok and LED was blinking at ~1hz. I then proceeded to turn it on and off and at the third switching off it just stopped switching on. The LED is dead, all of the voltages (va, vs, stby, ps_on) are close to zero too.

I've waited for 15 minutes after that at it still would not turn on at all.

EDIT: Another attempt to turn on after waiting for 20 minutes, again, failure. TV clicks and just does not turn on. All voltages after the click are zero.

OK, in the fault condition is the standby voltage and the 13V or 15V OK?

I don't see any 13V voltages on SMPS. 15V is zero.

Once again, i tried to turn it on. When i plug it into mains, stby and ps_on are ok, power LED is red, logic LED is off. I turn it on with a remote, TV clicks, power led goes on and off, logic LED starts generally blinking with a period of 1 second and sometimes does two quick blinks, TV still clicks, stby and ps_on are OK. Did not have enough time to check va and vs. Screen is black.

Then in less than a minute TV stops clicking, all LEDs stop blinking, stby and ps_on are 0V.

After some more testing i think i got the general idea of how my TV behaves. As i turn it on after some clicking it turns off in such a way that all the voltages are 0V and it doesn't respond to a remote at all. If i unplug it and let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and then plug it again, it tries to turn on as it is "stuck" in On-state and then turns off again, voltages are 0v and so on. If i manage to turn it off while it is clicking, it stays in standby and then stby and ps_on are Ok. Until i try to turn it on, then - see above.

I think i'll have to test main board by trying to run built-in test patterns but i can't find service manual for my model and so don't understand which pins should i short on the logic board. Two highest pins are marked "NT" and two other pins are marked "PAL". My TV is PAL, not NTSC only. Does it mean that i should short PAL pins, not NT, after plugging off main board and shorting power-on pin on SMPS?

PAL/NTSC can be ignored - they just refer to the 50/60Hz modes of the plasma panel. It can display either format as well as 24Hz (usually by 3:2 pulldown onto 60Hz or by 72Hz/96Hz)

First, you should jumper the power to the set on - disconnect the main board power cable from the main board and connect PS ON and GND to turn the sub rails on.

Then disconnect LVDS cable from main board and jumper positions 3-4 on the PAL/NT connector for diagnostic test patterns.

Only make connection changes with power off.

did just that. It's WORKING, voltages aok.

I understand it means that mainboard is gone. Do you think it might be due to those two caps i posted in my first message in this thread? They look exactly like bad caps if i ever saw one.

Great. Yea, looks like main board. I don't think those caps are bad. It's probably a BGA chip failure or worn out flash memory - those are the two most common causes we see.

I'm perfectly sure i did nothing but my TV seems to be completely dead.

After i turned it on bypassing the main board, i let it run test patterns for half an hour before plugging it out of the mains. Nobody touched TV, i'm sure of that. Today it just would not turn on at all with manboard still disconnected, no clicks, no LEDs, no voltages anywhere.

I waited for 10 mins and reconnected the main board, but result is still the same: nothing when i plug the TV into the mains, no stby and ps_on, nothing at all.

Can i test SMPS in isolation by disconnecting it from main board and x and checking if stby and ps_on are present?

I've waited for a day and the TV turned on OK with main board connected, all the voltages were OK.

I turned it off and disconnected the mains. TV did not turn on after 10 mins' waiting, all the voltages are again dead.

TV still would not turn on at all, no stby, no ps_on. Both fuses on power board are ok.

Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to test this BN44-0513A power board if it just won't power up at all?

Have you put in a replacement mainboard? or is it still the original.

No replacements still, thinking of getting a new SMPS since TV does not power on even with x- and main boards disconnected, or with main board bypassed.

No power LED, no logic LED, no power at all.
