    SAMSUNG LN40B530P7N bad TCON?

please tell me this is bad TCON...
when i bought the TV for 10 dollars, i could see the display on the tv, change channels, inputs, use the menu, everything was fine, it was just wayyy brighter than it should have been.

when i got it home and turned it on it looked like this:
    http://youtu.be/KhpHp311vGM

now after messing with the tcon its pretty much just entirely a white screen with just the hint of the menu.

i tried unplugging one side at a time and this is where its left me.
in my mind because its affecting the entire screen, im thinking its likely a bad tcon. or am i just being hopeful and its a bad panel?

that definatley sounds like the tcon does it start normal with a good image then go really bright to an almost white mate

It doesn't look like a panel fault.

It could be T-con or main. If you do ever get the menus back, there is a quick test to see which is bad.

        Put TV into standby

Then on remote press MUTE, 1, 8, 2, and finally POWER.

        Access Control > Test Pattern.

You have three pattern selections (press left/right to move through each pattern, up/down for each generator):
        - FBE Pattern Sel: This is the main board pattern generator, the OSD is added on top.
        - FRC BeforeDDR: This pattern is generated on the t-con before the FRC converts the video (50Hz -> 100Hz, etc.)
        - FRC AfterDDR: This is after the DDR is used to process the video for the FRC.

If the fault exists only on FBE Pattern Sel: main board
If it exists on only the BeforeDDR or AfterDDR: t-con board

Possibly, if you can narrow it down to Before/AfterDDR you could identify exact t-con fault.

Otherwise, you will have to try one (I would try main board first) and if not, the other.

...Wait, what on the T-con did you mess with?

nothing major just unplugging/ replugging connectors...
*sigh* all the TCON i can find for sale are around 40$ ...even the repair kit is 20...
hope i can get the menu up to tell for sure, but if i cant, is there any other way to diagnose the tcon by itself? on another TV i had
            https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38097
glitcher had me test the VGAMMA pins...and then alastair said it was the gamma ref chip.
suppose ill try that same test here...
i still havent the skill or tools to solder such small chips though. need to work on that!

the vgamma readings seem way different than on the other TV. but if theyre supposed to be going down in 1 to 1.5v increments, theyre certainly not doing that. all but 2 of the pins are at 15.9v one of them is 14.something and another is 12.something
if i do order a new tcon board, does it have to be exactly the same, or is there some room for mixing and matching? i think $20 for a tcon should be about right...the prices people want to charge for these parts is not leaving much meat on the bone!

You paid $10 for the TV and complain about a $40 T-con...? I -wish- I had prices like that here. Normally I'd buy a TV for $50 (£35)

It sounds like your gamma chip is bad. BUT you will have the original issue too. The $20 repair kit is a rip off, the chip is $5.

Did you unplug/plug in while the set was live?

no i dont think i tried that...is it safe to go around unplugging and replugging in boards while the tv is on??

what do you mean that i will have the original issue too?

i dont mean to complain i just wish if people wouldnt ask so much for the parts then more tvs could be saved!

Usually not, I wouldn't advise it. Was just checking that you had not.

The scrambled screen. Bad gamma IC would not cause that...

                      oh?? dang..then i have/had a motherboard problem as well?
another reason i wouldnt want to spend 40 for a TCON only to find out i have to buy a motherboard too!

i havent been able to make it do that crazy pattern for a while now though. its just almost pure white. i can just barely make out the menu screen and channel screens but i cant read any words. i hooked up my n64 and the sound comes thru when i change to the right source, but without seeing a clear picture, i cant say the motherboard is good? only the power supply and inverter?
