    samsung pn50c550g1fxza

I have a chance to pick up for cheap. The tv has has a black screen in the left half of the screen , the right side gets a normal picture. Do you think this is a easy fix, like maybe a x buffer. Or could it be a bad panel??

    likely the lower buffers.

Gently remove the ribbon cables one by one from the lower buffers.
Turning the tv on and off as you unplug each on. If you find one that you remove that brings up the whole picture minus 1 vertical line from the ribbon you have disconnected then you have a bad connection to the panel and it can't be fixed.

Sometimes just re seating these ribbons is all it will need.

If the picture remains half and half then replace the lower buffer.

wouldn't bad buffers be only TOP or BOTTOM halve?

        Repaired this one fairly recently.
Had 3 lower buffers, hence why only a third of the screen was black.

        Replaced the lower left buffer...

ah,ok,I was thinking with the term "buffer" the bufferboard on the far left side(connected to the y-main),You are talking about what I call the C-boards on the bottom of the screen, correct?

Indeed. To avoid confusion I'll call them c-boards aswel.
Although I thought samsung labels them as buffer boards.

I believe a common issue on these is a blown fuse.

I am still on the fence whether to get this tv. Is this set prone to bad panel connections? Its available for around $50.

It is a risk, but it is a 50" 1080p TV. In the worst case the main board & sustains are worth money.

As tom says, I'd buy it, you should easily recoup your money by selling the boards should the panel be bad.
