    Samsung PN42C430A1D - Clicking

    Hello Everyone,

A few weeks ago my plasma TV began clicking as if their was a short in one of the boards. Initially i began debugging by removing each of the boards and seeing if the TV would boot up. As soon as i unplugged the y-main board, the TV would boot with its start up sounds playing perfectly fine, just without any image on the screen. Then to check, i plugged back in the y-main and the initial problem returned. Naturally, i though it was the Y-main board and i ordered a replacement part. But once i installed this new board, nothing changed.

I've also check the voltages on the PS board with and without the y-main board. With it, the voltages dropped to 0, and without they matched the values displayed on the sticker (Va = 54, Vsc = -197 and Vs = 210).

When i removed the ymain connection

    Sticker with voltage information

    Y-Buffer

I can post more images if it will be more helpful.

    Thanks for your help!!

Try running the TV with the Y-main installed but the X-main out.

After plugging in the ymain and ybuffer, and unplugging the xmain (See image below), I received the same results.

I've posted a video showing what happens.

I apologize for the quality, my phone's camera is not the best.

        Thanks again for the help!

Try it with all boards ,only disconnect the Y buffer. I think you will have vs and va

Odd. I think the main board could be bad too - the voltages are steady in both cases? (except when it clicks of course.)

Hi does the green led on the control board flash two time then go off for five sec then two again and relay clicks in time with the led, i had this with a PS42C450 and it was the main board that was at fault Flocko

Also on the set i had when plugged in the red standby light on the front would come on as normal and the remote would try to power on, but once the set was trying to start (relay clicking and two green flashes to control board )pressing the remote power button would not put it back in standby,i had to pull the mains plug to stop the cycle, also some thing to note on the Bush version of this set running with the Y buffer disconnected from the Y sus board and powering on blows the X sus board, i have never been mad enough to try this on this model Flocko

My standard advice on these thin Samsungs is to test components on the large Y-main and X-main heat sinks for shorts to avoid damaging good boards chained to bad boards. If one or both of the mains is found to have shorts, change it and the attached buffer board. I'm not sure if this works in all cases.

So i tested with everything except for the ybuffer and received the same results. I also check the voltages and they were all at 0v (vs,va etc). The blinking with everything attached starts with two blinks then turns off completely but the standby light is still on. It follows the same pattern that flocko mentioned. Capkid, Is their anyway for me to test each board separately?

Just my two cents worth. I wouldn't necessarily dismiss the power supply. My logic is that the Y-Sus board draws enough current that it causes the power supply to drop it's bundle. When that load is removed (the Y-Sus) it is able to give the necessary voltages. These power supply boards for plasmas nearly all seen to have some version of 6-pin regulating device. As I'm finding, they can be cantakerous - not failing outright but giving strange faults like you have described. They only cost a couple of dollars and it might be worthwhile changing it out just to dismiss that possibility. (As always, I stand to be correct by those that are more knowledgeable!)

The power supplies rarely fail in this line of Samsungs, and the symptoms present as if there's a PSU failure. I would remove the X and Y from the TV and test the diodes and transistors on the heat sinks. Test in diode mode on your meter, alternating between various combinations of probe-to-pin placement for each component. If you see a short (e.g. "0.000"), you'll have to replace that board and the buffer attached to it.

do you have the same thing with the remote not turning the set back to standby? I am lucky in the fact that i have four or five spare sets of boards for this set, as at first i thought it was Ysus/Xsus/ buffer, but when checked over had no shorts, then thinking about it, it was the remote not working to put it back in stand by that gave it away, and the blink code on the control board, with all the sets i have had with faulty Y+X the blink code is one second on five second off, so check your boards for shorts and if your having the same pattern with the remote i think the main is faulty Flocko

Well this sucks, I followed the instructions you posted on the similar thread (really simple instructions so thank you) and I found shorts on both the ymain, the xmain and the brand new ymain I bought . Is there a way for to test the ybuffer and xbuffer ? The xbuffer only seams to have a capacitor on it.

Also, now that I have three boards with fried transistors , is their anything I can do with these parts. Capkid, you mentioned that they are difficult to repair ?

That's too bad. A bad Y-main tends to kill a good X-main and vice versa the more you test and play with these TVs after they exhibit signs of failure. What I've always advised is to test the X and Y out of circuit when the failure signs first appear to avoid a more catastrophic failure.

Your best bet is to replace the Y-main, Y-buffer, and X-main ALL AT ONCE. I've never found a reliable way to test the Y-buffers in these TVs, and I had one buffer I thought was good kill my Y-main. You most likely don't need to replace the X-buffer. Repairing the boards rarely, if ever, works. Trust me. I had several X and Y boards lying around from unsuccessful repair attempts.

Edit: ShopJimmy is probably the most reliable seller because of their 6-month warranty program. Also, you'll need to update the firmware after the replacements are installed.

Sorry to hear that X ,Y and buffer have bit the dust, this is what happens with this model if you start disconnecting boards, as i said trying to run the set with no Y buffer will kill the X Sus, dead X Sus will kill Y Sus and round and round you go. As capkid says you need to test for shorts on all replacement boards before you fit them or you will take another trip round the block, not all so called working boards work, and i still think you have a main board problem as well with the control board two blink code. keep use posted Flocko
