Look into ETA Electronics Techician Association. I am a member on Industrial Electronic Reveiw Committee. I Have a Master Certification. That is Six different feilds of electronics.
Look online, they offer many different feilds of electronics. They have list of topics to study and reference material available. Practice exams too. There is a Consumer electronics exam. There is a core exam for the basic electronics that is common to all the feilds then the Journeyman specialty exams. If you can get through it you will be very well educated.There also is ISCET that I am a member of. International Society of Certified Electronic. Technicians. They too have Consumer Electronics. These offer Certifications that you can take with you, job to job.
I had gotten away from TV work for 30 years and a lot has changed. The exams have changed to keep up todate. This Forum has been helpful to me because there are not a lot of books printed on modern TV because it changes so fast but the basics stay the same. Past 28 years was ROV remotely operated vehicles.(underwater robots) Mostly industrial electronics, electrical / mechanical.

I recommend E-Books from Damon Morrow and Jestine Yong. They are online and easy to find. There are lots of info here that is not covered in those books but they cover things not listed here. Together it is a wealth of knowledge. Certification will give you the advantage over someone without it. But its very hard to beat someone with hands on knowledge and skill.
