    Samsung PN51D450A2D 5 blinks

I picked this up in a lot of tvs the other day, opened it up and everything looks ok inside, so I applied power. Set has standby and tries to turn on with a loud buzzing coming from the upper left corner ymain and buffer. I tried to power it up with the y and x disconnected and it gives me 5 blinks and a startup squeak. Next I reconnected the y and x and disconnected the y buffer board and I am getting the same startup squeak followed by 5 blinks. So my basic search for a service manual turned up nothing I dont suppose you guys have a link? Im supposing there is a jumper that needs to be placed between y and buffer like on the panasonics to isolate?

If you get buzzing check panel carefully around edges for cracks.
Look at control board LED. Does it light for 5 seconds and go off for 2, or is it blinking approx once a second?
    No isolation jumper on these.

You called that one right, after looking carefully there is a 1/2" crack in the screen in the upper corner where it was buzzing. Well I guess I have some boards to sell off, any tips on testing samsung buffers before selling them. Btw the control board led did come on for 5 seconds then off for two seconds.

Most likely it is bad though, I would not risk selling it unless I was absolutely confident.

5-2 indicates control board has shut down due to bad plasma panel, X-main or Y-main (failure in combined energy recovery circuit.) You cannot be certain the X- and Y-main are good but in most cases they are - cracked panel doesn't usually kill them. That is unless the previous owner hit the screen in frustration after it stopped working... You would need a scope to test the brief output before control shuts it down.

Ok, I will put the scope on it and give it a look see.

Caleb. Usually in my findings is that if there is no damage to the substrate material on the screen usually buffers survive being powered up on a cracked panel. Panels where the substrate material cracked along with the glass theres a chance damage can happen to the buffer ic. But a quick ohm test should reveal that.

It is a tiny crack, to bad you couldn't do a windshield repair on the glass then refill the gas The buffer isn't really a big deal, most are going for less than 20$ Some as low as 10$ with free shipping. Id rather not sell an iffy board than possibly make 10$. But I will do the ohm test just for practice. Ive been avoiding plasmas after the first gave me such fits, but that last Panasonic wasn't too bad and the Panasonic I'm working on now seems to be an easy fix (we'll see when my parts arrive). I got one more Panasonic from that same lot...however when I took the back off apparently the guy I got it from switched out the guts from another model. Its a real mess I'm hoping I will be able to put it back together correctly and get it running again. That one deserves its own thread of what not to do.

Oh man. Sounds fun. Im currently into at a freebie 80 inch sharp aquos with a bo backlight issue that someone hackjobbed. Fun.

I wish someone gave me a free 80 inch Sharp Aquos. Biggest free set was a 42 inch off brand LCD.

Lol everytime I go in Costco my son points at the 83" lcd and says Dad I cant wait for those to start dieing so we can get one for free... I guess they have begun to die already, kind of sad when you think of the short lifespan these tvs seem to have.

Tom Im shocked you havent got any 50" for free yet, Ive gotten 3 intact screen 50" now free and half a dozen more with broken screens. Got a beautiful 55" vizio only a year old I set aside hoping someday soon I will be able to find one of the same model dead with an intact screen. Almost scored a 60 a couple weeks ago but someone beat me to it by an hour.

Freakaftr good luck with the hackjob set, I will post that panasonic next-the guy did a horrendous job on it, literally duct tape and wire holding the boards to the tv

I think part of the reason is very few (<1% of people) have sets above 50 inch here. It's just not seen as a necessity.
