Re: Toshiba 50HP66 Plasma No Picture Flickering
Do you have a screwdriver? Take the TV apart and take some pictures.
I can think of a few causes:
- Bad Vs/Va caps
- Bad main SMPS caps
- A short circuit or arcing contact somewhere (any popping/crackling from TV?)
Any sound?
Can you turn off TV normally from RC when screen flickering? Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Yes I can turn off with RC, no poping/crackling or sound from tv at all. I'll be taking apart shortly. Here's the lataest video just took it.

Re: Toshiba 50HP66 Plasma No Picture Flickering
I had the exact same problem on a Vizio 50" plasma. That's one of your IPM's (integrated power module) on the Ysustain board ticking.
Both IPM's on the board are usually replaced. I had my board repaired at Coppell's TV repair (in the DFW area) at a cost of $125 about
three months ago. The modules are very difficult to desolder!

Re: Toshiba 50HP66 Plasma No Picture Flickering
Cliff is probably right about his diagnosis, but let's try some things first.
The power supply is full of high quality Chemicon capacitors, so they are unlikely to be the fault.
Terminology: The Y-sustain is on the LEFT of the screen when looking from the back. It connects through to the Y-buffers and to the plasma panel itself. There are two buffers in most LG based plasmas which yours appears to be. The upper buffer controls the upper half of the screen, and the lower buffer controls the lower half.
The Z-sustain is on the RIGHT of the screen from the back. It doesn't go through any buffers.
Caution - A working plasma TV has sustain voltages in excess of 200VDC. These can be dangerous. While in operation (plugged in OR standby), do not touch any part of the TV.
Some steps for you to follow:
- Unplug the Z-sustain. Pull the main power cable from this. Do this while the TV is turned off (unplugged.) Now, turn the TV on. Without a Z-sustain the picture will appear dark, sometimes purple-tinted (due to the UV not being fully converted into visible light) and slow to update. However, if you -CAN- see a picture now, this indicates a problem with the Z-sustain.
- Now, plug the Z-sustain back in, again while TV is unplugged.
- Unplug the top Y upper buffer. You may need to unscrew it. Disconnect it from both the panel connectors and sustain board.
- Turn the TV on - does a picture appear on the bottom half, or is it still flickering? - If picture appears, it could be a Y upper buffer fault.
- Turn the TV off again.
- Do the same procedure with the Y lower buffer.
- Turn the TV on - does a picture appear on the top half, or is it still flickering? - If picture appears, it could be a Y lower buffer fault.
- Restore the TV to the condition before you started work - if all of this failed to locate a board, it's probably the problem Cliff mentions. Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!
