    Digital Stream HD3150 Plus

This is a set top ATSC tuner box that will not power on. I did some research on the net and found that a known problem is a bad capacitor issue and some have had success replacing. Upon further inspection my particular unit seems to have more that just a bad cap but wanted to check with you guys first before I trash the thing. Upon opening the box I observed; burn marks on the board, yellow goo on caps and other components, black goo on caps and other components. Pics are attached. Please advise if this looks fixable by replacing caps and other components. Thanks.

FYI...I refer to the things on the board (such as the caps) as "components" because I don't know the correct terminology.

That yellow/brown goo used to be white glue when it was new from the factory. The white glue holds the components in place as they go through the assembly line.

Over time, that glue turns yellow/brown and can cause problems later. You can scrape that stuff off.

The burn marks are a bit hard to make out. The resolution is a bit low to make out any detail. You can go up to 2000x2000 on this forum.

      Re: Digital Stream HD3150 Plus

I am having a similar problem with my HD3150+.

the resistors on my circuit board are showing some heat, but they are not scortched the way that yours are. I have looked closely at the capacitors and there is zero deformation of the tops.

I checked the voltage output and I do not get voltages anywhere near the appropriate level.

      Anyone have any thoughts?
      Thanks

Looking at the second pic, looks like a small (maybe 1/4 watt?) resistor burned up.

Looking at the 5th pic, Resistor R78 is definitely toasted.

Some glue was oozed across those resistors in china.

With heat and time, the 'glue' became a wire. Before the glue totally breaks down, the voltages will be off due to leakage upsetting the references/regulation.

You may be rebuilding/replacing everything from the rectifiers to the primary of the tx.
