Thomson Wysius 42WM02L (42" Plasma TV): orange tint & sparkles

Got this TV for £2.19 .

When plugged in it works fine, but initially has an orange tint. After a few minutes the tint goes away. Other problems are sparkles visible during dark scenes.

Opening it up I see the three caps filtering the Vs bus are bulged. They do not have a vent and look ready to explode!! Why do these caps not have a vent?

I am going to replace these and I am wondering if these could cause the described problems?

On the set I notice various warnings about high voltage and hot surfaces. I have never fixed a plasma before, only dealt with LCDs, which have 330V-400V PFC buses, but I have been careful with them. What precautions should I take around the high-voltage buses? The caps measure 0.06V with my meter - is there a bleeder resistor anywhere for them? I left the TV off for about 1 hour (unplugged) and the PDP was cool to the touch.

It's annoying - this TV was originally £3,000, apparently - and it is full of cheap Samyoung and Samwha capacitors.

I was going to use these: http://uk.mouser.com/ProductDetail/P...dkzWuKDhcfI%3d but I notice they are snap-in, would this make much of a difference?

I will upload pictures shortly... just have to find the camera.

There is a plastic disc on the top of those caps. The vent is under the disc.

Is there a reason the plastic disc is used? Are these caps in danger of explosively failing?

So I am wondering if those snap in caps will fit? I do have the option to solder wires to the holes, mount the caps upside down and solder leads to the terminals but I would prefer to do it properly. Anyone have a link for non-snap-in caps for a reasonable price?

Okay I am going to go ahead and replace the capacitors and see if it fixes the issue at hand. Are there any other particular issue with Thomson and LG plasma TVs? (The TV is basically an LG inside - everything is marked "LG Electronics", including the PDP.)

You have it backwards. LG makes plasma panels and sells plasma panel assemblies to TV manufacturers. An assembly consists of the plasma panel itself, the X and Y buffers, the Y and Z sustain, the logic control card, and often the power supply. The TV manufacturer provides the plastic housing, the signal board, input panel, speakers, etc.

As far as servicing the plasma assembly, look for the LG Plasma Quick Reference Alignment Hand Book. The power supply may or may not come from LG, the signal board may be a copy of LG's, or it might be supplied by Thomson. Since Thomson has all manufacturing done in China, you know what to expect.
