help with Zalman ZM 1250 PSU

Dear Badcap members,

I am a noob here with a psu problem.

I bought a Zalman zm 1250 platinum psu from a pc gaming outfit in the UK about a year ago.

It was an ex demo model I think.

It runs OK for about 40 minutes powering an asus sabertooth 990 fx board plus an engt 430 graphics card and a pny ssd.

It then suddenly shuts down for no apparent reason.

We replaced the psu with a spare one I had and the pc is running OK.

We tried replacing the cables etc but it doesn't help.

This psu has a variety of protection circuits in it.

What sort of thing could cause this problem? Could it be e.g. a faulty capacitor or diode?

Suggestions welcome on this.

was it sold as ex-demo, or new?
if it was sold as new - you have a 2year warranty under EU law.

I bought the psu from Overclockers in the UK.

It was what they call a B grade item which is sold as follows:

Below is the original description for this product, any reference to warranty is to be ignored. Warranty for this item is 90 days as with all B Grade items.

B Grade items may have been used, have damaged packaging, missing accessories or a combination of these.

Some items may have scuff marks or slight scratches but should otherwise be an operable product.


I think it was an ex demo model of some kind.

It has 105 C Japanese capacitors, active PFC and LCC resonant circuits and dual transformers. It also has a secondary protection IC. It is a DC DC circuit design.

I rang overclockers and they said I should contact Zalman - the psu has a 5 year guarantee.

I sent an email to Zalman in Korea but have not received a response.

the dealer should be responsible for the warranty afaik.

I assume that you mean that even though the dealer sold it with a 90 day warranty etc, the fact that the manufacturer's warranty is for 5 years means that the dealer should take it back and get the manufacturer to repair it etc.

I will investigate this.
