Hi, I have an acer nitro 5 that will only charge when powered off. If i plug in a charger when its turned on it works for a few seconds then the chargers protection kicks in and shuts the charger off, I have tested it with 2 chargers. It works perfectly fine off the battery when in use. If I disconnect the battery, the laptop also works fine just off the charger. Can anyone suggest anything? Im guessing if it was a motherboard short then the laptop would not power on at all.

Re: Acer Nitro AN517-51 only charges when off
no, the only one I have is 120w, would it short out? Its not getting as far as windows so i didnt think it would draw that much current? Ill get a 135w to test just to confirm. I did plud into a bench power supply with an acer dc socket end attached and it went up and down but didnt go over 4.8 amps if thats any help.

Re: Acer Nitro AN517-51 only charges when off
You may have a fault with the DCin mosfets.
Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode.
Check the resistance across the 2 x DCin mosfets.
Source & drain
Source & gate
Gate & drain
Post each measurement.
The 135 watt power adapter is still recommended but do review the above mosfets.
