Dead Laptop Motherboard, then refurbished one installed...

My venerable and old laptop (Toshiba Satellite P75-A7200 equipped with an i7-4700MQ, circa 2014) and previously a powerful machine during its heyday is no more. Have been using it for many years, but about 3 months ago it went kaputt for no apparent reason (left it on overnight [normally it goes to standby mode after some idle time], and in the morning it was cold dead with no boot, no post, no leds; nothing at all).

Since the 1990s I have been building custom desktop computers, etc; but it has been few years since my last built one and for the last 15 years I have built very few desktop computers sporadically. So, I am not abreast of the new development in terms of computer hardware, etc.

As aforementioned, the laptop was dead. I went ahead and took it apart, removed the motherboard and performed some basic tests - continuity, resistance, and then volt injection. Soon, I realized that the likelihood of fixing it was not high, and it would be very time consuming. So, I went ahead and ordered another motherboard (presumably refurbished) on aliexpress of all places (not recommended really)

Subsequently, installed the motherbaord with the processor, memory, and ancilliary systems and subsystems connected. Once most of of the system was assembled, I tried to turn it on but the system not even boot up, nor POST or no nothing. When the power button is pressed it lights up for a split of a second and then goes off and nothing happens (no fan, nothing on screen, nothing...). When it is connected to the power supply the the power indicator led lights up, and when the battery is installed the battery charging light lights up as well; other than that, there is no sign of life.

But one thing went amiss, I I forgot to affix in the back of the new motherbaord the thin small cpu bracket. Since it is a small and very thin bracket that seemed to be an integral part of the motherboard; I did not notice its presence or absence. Anyhow, the heatsink is making good contact with the cpu; so even though it is not putting enough pressure on the cpu die, the cpu should not overheat so fast to the point that it would not even boot up at all -- at least that is an assumption I am making.

    Any insights would be appreciated.

Start dis-connecting any easily accessible accessory items on board one at a time, speakers, screen, batt, etc. Try booting each time a ribbon cable or other item is dis connected, if any change then the item that causes prob is isolated, if no change possible board defective.

Further to the suggestions in the last post, you do have coverage from the AliExpress purchase.

How recent was this board received?

Initiate a dialogue with the vendor through the AliExpress app on your phone or PC. The chats are logged and can be reviewed by the AliExpress team.

Mention that the board is not working. Ask if they tested the unit before shipping and ask them for advice on what this may be failing.

If the vendor is silent, contact and alert your payment vendor...was it PayPal or a credit card payment?

We have had excellent results in sourcing parts and spare motherboards from AliExpress vendors. It is very possible that you have a short from the mounting of the board inside your enclosure. Double check your work.

      Is the cpu mounted correctly?

It has been some time since I ordered the motherboard. I ordered it in June, but only received it at beginning of July. But then I was away for some time, and once I returned did not have time to install or test it right away. Only recently (few days ago), I went ahead and installed it.

Aliexpress only allows one to open a dispute 15 days after having received the product which is really ridiculous, especially considering that there is no manufacturing warranty whatsoever. Adding that it is not a simple device that one could simply plug in to a power outlet and do some quick test to know whether or not it is doa. And even in this cases doa is a very limited and short term test.

Previously, I have ordered a bench power supply on aliexpress that was not working properly. Contacted the seller, and had a really nasty, obtuse, and obinoxios experience; then I escalated the dispute to aliexpress to no avail. At the end of the day, I had to file a charge back dispute with my credit card company. I am still waiting for the outcome of that dispute.

I just sent a message to the seller, but I am not holding my breath. Likely, I will have to file another charge back dispute.

I bought few items on aliexpress over the years. It is a hit or miss: if the item bought is in perfect working condition and does not fail in the foreseable future, then it is good deal; if the item arrives defective or fails short thereafter, good luck -- you will need. Overall, for me, it is not a good marketplace to buy things; you may save a little bit of money but then have to wait a long time for delivery and if the item is fault there is a good chance that you basically wasted your money.

Yeah, the cpu is properly seated. The board uses a torx screw to hold the cpu (turned clockwise) in place and it is aligned (triangle mark).

So far, the motherboard was reinstalled with the cpu's heatsink back bracket in place, and many tests were performed. Unless the CPU is bad (very rare), the motherboard is defective.

Yeah, I follow your suggestions. It seems that this motherboard is shot. I reassembled the board with the proper heatsink back bracket, etc, did most basic tests eliminating all possible points of failure or faultness (disconnected everything and tried different memory modules in different slots and banks, etc) to no avail.

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
            by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

            Dell Latitude E6540 - 2nd dead motherboard
            by DrvLikHell
Greetings and sanitations! Several years ago I received some really awesome help on this forum for fixing my monitor (which is still working) so I figure maybe someone can help with this laptop issue.

I have a Dell E6540, motherboard 9411P, DP/N:VWNW8. A year ago it died a strange death where at first it wouldn't turn on all the time, but would turn on when it felt like it, then it got worse where it wouldn't turn on at all and I would just get a flashing light. So I replaced the motherboard with a matching part number board. (I still have the old motherboard) Now a year later this...

            Programming KBC IT8987VG ASUS TUF FX506L RT809F+PEB
            by araxnido
Dear friends, I want to share my experience repairing an ASUS TUF FX506L gaming laptop motherboard: DABKXDMB8E0_F_BKXD. Boardview and schematic are available, as well as the BIOS and ITE ROM.

When the customer brought in this laptop, it was initially dead; it showed no signs of booting for any reason. After hours of measurements, checking each stage, MOSFET, and seeing if there was a short circuit in any capacitor, I discovered a strange 0.7V leakage voltage on the 3V_S5 rail, particularly on the PL9 coil, with the board not powered on. There were 3V_LDO and 5V_LDO voltages, which...

            HP Envy 17-3290NR 3D Blank Screen - motherboard Louis V1.1 6050A2489901
            by Archimedes
Subject is a blank screen issue in HP Envy 17-3290NR 3D version laptop with motherboard Louis V1.1 6050A2489901 MB-A02. Production year is 2012. This one is a 2nd hand motherboard which I could use it for few months only. Suddenly no output from the internal display and also no signal from HDMI port then Windows out of order after few boots.

Caps lock working normally and no HP's caps-lock warning blinks. Making a hard reset and replacing the RAM sticks or using different slots didn't help.

Fans are spinning. Blindly could install windows11 and got the device manager...
