You should be able to get into the bootpicker via OPTION. Reasons are faulty keyboard or possible EFI corruption. Try both keys on either side of the spacebar, or you could try a PC keyboard via USB and hold the ALT key.

A MAC OS USB installer should boot automatically though if you have no SSD fitted. If it still doesn't boot via that method, issue is likely EFI related. I'd be trying a clean ME donor EFI for this machine and go from there.

EFI password would prevent booting from another drive. Need to open boot menu.

Appears to be. Not with much experience on this but recall our techs using an external clamshell (USB housing from OWC) to host this SSD and then erasing / applying new OS onto the drive.

They are cheap on the open market - not a bad idea to test with a known good SSD for this model.

Do update this thread once you have had a chance to test another SSD. In the meantime, check for any possible contact fluff on the PCB for this SSD socket. Clean with IPA - always a good idea.
