    X1 Carbon Gen3 5 beeps

    Hi,

I have received an X1 carbon gen 3 (board 13268-1) which is supposedly having a bad MB. Unfortunately the previous owner did not say what "bad motherboard" means.

First symptoms : upon plugging in power, the power button lights up in green, but nothing happens. My first guess was that a corrupted bios could cause this.
Wannabe solution 1 : I reflashed the bios with a known good one.

Now there is an update with the symptoms : When I plug it in the fan spins for around 5 seconds, and then it just throws a common fault message of 5 beeps, pause, 5 beeps.

According to a few thinkpad sites, the 5-5 beeps is just "Motherboard failure"
    https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Error...and_Beep_Codes

Weird thing : sometimes after plugging in the power, it shuts off after 10 ish second (audible click noise from speaker), and on other times, it stays "on" ( Power button stays green)

Visual inspection shows zero signs of physical damage.

After the following, I have decided to measure a few components and that's what I got :

    vcc cpu core - 1.8v
    1R05AMT_VX - 0.6v
    VCC1R05AMT - 1v
    VCC5M_PH - 9.0-9.2v
    CHARGER_SW - 0.7v
    BQ24760_CSP - 0.7v

Also : I could not find any blown fuses, I've checked around 20 ish (but its possible I missed some)

(I'm not sure what else to measure other than cpu core, hence this post)
I can send boardview files for anyone who's interested

Power down. Remove the battery. Check the resistance to ground on each coil on the logic board.

Is the ram removable? If yes, remove it and boot up again.

Does the POST beep code change ?

Resistance in all coil is 0.5 ohm.

RAM is non removeable sadly, its soldered on, and epoxied in place

All previous tests were performed without a battery.

      Do you suspect RAM failure?

Please check the resistance to ground of each coil.

Red meter lead to coil. Black meter lead to ground.

          My bad,

          L1 - 57.8Ω
          L7 - 185Ω
          L28 - 814Ω
          L3 - 1.525 kΩ
          L4 - 435 Ω
          L5 - 38 kΩ (this is of CHARGER_SW)

The resistance values look ok and do not show any shorts to ground of the measured rails.

We do not have a lot to go on but review the charger IC which of course is in the witness protection program.

Are the boardview files posted on this forum for this logic board ?

Found the attached details from another schematic in my subscription database. Perhaps use it to compare against your logic board for the same component. Only to confirm the charger IC is ok.
