A customer brought in a Sony Vaio SVF153A1YM and said the problem was: "battery not charging (discharges when charger plugged in)".
I have plugged in the charger and there are not lights on the laptop. The laptop does not turn on either.
Diagnosis so far:
1) 19.5V on the pins 1-3 (source) of PQ35, but nothing on pins 5-8 (drain),
3) Changed PQ35, but still no power on the DRAIN pins.
4) Replaced PQ35.
5) Checked PQ2A and PQ2B (which is one chip) and pins 1 & 6 are connected (shorted?)
6) Removed PQ2 and rechecked the chip. No connection between pins 1 & 6.
7) After removing PQ2 I checked the pads of the footprint of PQ2 and there is still a short? between pins 1 & 6.
8) Replaced PQ2.
9) Checked resistors and capacitors around PQ35 and PQ2 for shorts and values. Here are my results:
a) PR1 and PR7 are supposed to be 220k but test 115k on the board.
b) Capacitors PC3, PC11, PC93, PC92, EC2 and EC1 are all ok (one gnd connection only).
c) PC4 doesn't have a connection to ground on either side. Having checked, this is correct result (one pin is VA+ and the other connects to PR7).
Im summary, I am stumped!
Is there really a short on pins 1 & 6 of PQ2? if yes, how is it being shorted?
The next section of check will be: "VIN Short Circuit Protection for ADP/BAT".
Any help would be gratefully received.
