Hey all,
So I'm still pretty novice when it comes to extensive repairs, and I'm a little stumped on this one. This is also my first post on a professional forum like this, (besides the intro-post) so go easy on me! Let me lay out the deets:
I have, in my possession, a Dell Inspiron 3520. Offered to do a data recovery for a friend and asked what the problem seemed to be. He told me that it won't power on. I offered to inspect and troubleshoot the laptop. I discovered that it does indeed power on, but would not boot into the OS. Furthermore, the screen did not turn on and the computer would give 3 audible beeps repeatedly until the power button was pressed.
After some research, I discovered a table showing all of the Dell "beep-translations." See Below. (I've also sent it as an attachment)

After doing some additional research, I've learned that this is a VERY common problem with this model. However, nobody seemed to have found a common 100% solution to this. It appears that all the fixes people find are "temporary" and only work half the time. These solutions are typically involving the user to temporarily unseat the CMOS battery or RAM for about 10 mins or so. As I said, this worked for some users, amazingly, but only for a short period. Eventually, the problem returned.
Another user reports that he had replaced his motherboard after this issue, but the problem persisted. I find that shocking, considering that it should have solved any problem relating to the "3 beeps." This user posted his situation on a Dell repair forum of some sort and was simply told to do exactly what he had already done...replace the freakin' motherboard.
I tried the method with the CMOS battery, but that has not helped me. Did not touch the RAM yet. The only change I noticed is that the beeping has ceased. I highly doubt that it is because I didn't connect the speakers...I was very careful to do that. I'll take her apart and check again just to be safe.
Besides this, I've read that the BIOS could be corrupted. However, I have never reinstalled BIOS, and I have no idea how I would do that if the screen is not working.
I've shared everything I know thus far. Hopefully, you fellas could help me out a bit. I'd love to learn what you guys know about this issue!
Greatly appreciate your time.
P.S.
If you need any further images, just let me know. I'll gladly take some well-lit pictures of the laptop and any components you'd like to see. Again, thanks!
