    Experiences in Laptop Motherboard Replacement

    Dear technicians,

Recently I heard that if a laptop's motherboard is replaced, the laptop and its OS may load fine, but the laptop may hangs sometimes out of the blue. This is due to the fact that laptop motherboards are usually provided by unauthorized people and such motherboards are sometimes not new. that means the motherboard may contain hidden faults specifically in its GPU.

Now I have a Dell inspiron 5520 that needs motherboard replacement. But I am afraid to face a faulty motherboard with hidden faults.

Please share your experiences in motherboard replacement. How much success rate do you have after replacing with used motherboards and also new motherboards.

    Hi
This is why the dell techs have what's called a bio disk after the replacement it lets you match the system board info like service tag and board info to match your computer for the newer dells you need to download the utility from dell now on other model makes you use the dmi utility to match the laptop you are working on or on post it halts with error and it won't let computer boot until info matches system For older dells you could find the bios disk on eBay and it will tell you what model it supports this disk will also let you reset bios password if needed on older model like 2009 . Also in text editor you could edit the dmi info in bios if you know what you are doing . I have many ways to do if needed . Hope this help

      thanks Techman1025
If I replace the entire motherboard but use the old CPU and screen, does the laptop need a BIOS fix?
How much success rate do you have after replacing with used or new motherboards?

        hi
If it's the same as original no need to do anything it will work but the plastic model info won't match if they ever call dell ...also what windows version installed? You might need to run RW EVERYTHING edit or copy the product key also to write it down if every needed to match your system ...newer models don't use the product key stickers no longer on the EFI Bios unless you have a hack version of windows. So if harddrive dies and need to reload the OS these are little problem but not the end of the world all fixable...Just something you should know about.

If I buy a used motherboard from a non-authorized part seller, is it probably a faulty motherboard with strange hidden faults?

            Hi
You need to buy only working systemboards with a lease a 30 Warranty .. Don't buy other peoples junk that they tried to fix and made it worse ...Time is Money

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
                by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

Friend messed up my laptop motherboard while working on my bench
                by Geeker007
                Hi All,

So my friend was visiting and he wanted to use my solder bench to solder on some WLED circuit board. My laptop was open on the side for RAM upgrade. I know my mistake.

So while soldering he had too much solder on the soldering iron tip and he just shook off the soldering iron on the table itself to remove extra solder on the soldering tip and it landed on the motherboard of laptop. He then out of fear tried to remove it using solder wick and did more damage by removing some components as well. So here I am with weird situation.

                I have not tried putting...

I was trying to fix my old laptop that has stopped displaying image a long time ago. It boots up, lights light up, fan spins but no image. Conned it to TV by HDMI cable, but it was unsuccessful. Components look intact, no water damage/corrosion on the board.

I don't really value this laptop too much, so I wanted to ask anyone for a schematic/boardview file or anything that describes motherboard in a simillar faison. I want to experience a challenge of figuring...
