I left this laptop plugged in while windows was doing an update. When I returned to it about an hour later it was switched off. I pressed the power button and it started for a few seconds then powered off. It's been dead since. The battery has no voltage, as if the charging circuit stopped working and it discharged until it shut down. It wont charge or start up without the battery connected and the charger plugged in. I don't have a USB tester but I have a USB C breakout board so I can test the charging voltage. It's charging at only 5 V with two different USB C chargers. The original Dell charger charges another laptop at 20V. I read 4.5V at the battery terminals when the charger is plugged in. The CMOS battery reads 3.25V.
I've been dabbling with electronics for a long time but not laptops so I was hoping that people with experience might be able to point me in the right direction. From the schematic it appears to use an ISL88738 battery charging chip and TPS65982DD USB PD controller.
The battery was at about 92% of original capacity. It's a replacement that I bought off ebay a couple of years ago. It wasn't new but the capacity was at 99% when I bought it despite the seller claiming that it came out of a Dell laptop. I don't use this laptop all the time, it might sometimes sit for a month without being used.
