Got a weird issue with a Thinkpad T14 Gen1 motherboard out of/currently still in a scrap machine (cracked display, damaged case, otherwise working) that I bought to rob parts from for another thinkpad.
The motherboard generally works (booted into a test install of Win10 with no issues), however the fan never spins during use. It does spin for about 2 seconds right after turning on the laptop, but after that, never again.
Just to double-check, I've tried a different (known working) fan from a T14 Gen2 and it does the exact same thing when plugged into this mobo, and the fan from this T14 Gen1 works perfectly fine in a T14 Gen2, so the fan itself definitely isn't the problem (cause that would be a simple fix, can't have that lol)
It obviously overheats in no time (80-100C within minutes), so as a temporary workaround I've disconnected the PWM wire from the fan plug for now so it always runs at full speed, but that obviously isn't a proper fix.
This was just to do stability testing to verify that the board works otherwise (everything other than the fan issue).
What bothers me is that the fan isn't completely dead as it spins for a couple seconds after powerup, so it does get a PWM signal, and from the little bit of research I've done the PWM signal to control the fan seems to come from an embedded controller (MEC1663). If that's what's failing I'd have no way to deal with this, hardware wise.
I also don't get a fan error in BIOS for some reason, even with no fan plugged in at all. That doesn't seem right either.
If anyone has experienced (and ideally fixed) a similar issue or has any ideas on where to start, that would be greatly appreciated. At this point I'm not even sure whether it's a hardware issue or maybe EC firmware (!? ; botched mod attempt maybe?).
T14 Gen1 (type 20S0), i7-10510U, 16GB soldered RAM, no dGPU, NM-C931 rev 1.0 motherboard
