    Asus Rog G513qr Freezing

    Hello everyone.

I am here to ask for help identifying a problem with an Asus Rog G513qr, Ryzen 9 5900x and RTX 3070.

The laptop turns on but turns off or freezes when connecting a USB flash drive (even during the ROG logo). Even without using the USB ports, the laptop is unstable and when the charger is disconnected, it freezes.

A few months ago, the laptop started freezing when powered only by the battery and in power saving mode.

After replacing the NVME disk and replacing the liquid metal, thermal grease and thermal putty, it got worse and so I ended up opening it and checking the resistance value in the coils.

I think the problem lies in the low resistance of the 5V line. My idea is to open the jumper pads on the 5V line one by one and try to see if the resistance increases.

I thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, the resistance of the 5VALW is unusual low. Typical suspects are PMICs which are supplied from this rails, load switches and other peripherals, like Card Reader controller, USB-Controller, things like that.

From the history I would say it's a good idea to exclude the load switches which are switching power to the USB ports first.

And it would be most lokely helpful to have the board number.

      Board number: g533-6050A3250201-MB-A03 (A3)

After opening the pad6150 I found that on the coil side I have 20 kohm and 800 ohm on the consumption side.

On the consumers I can only isolate the sound IC through the pad504, then there are LED, USB and MOSFETs of the graphics and processor.

Is there any way to look for the problem without starting to remove components from the board?

Heating the suspect components with hot air one by one helps to find the one that is failing?

The low resistance is only found in P5VAL. The PAD504 of the sound IC was opened and the U2400, U2450, U2501, U8001 of the USB ports were removed from the board.
The resistance remains at 800 ohms.
At this point, all that remains are the CPU and GPU DrMos.
Am I approaching this problem wrong? Have I forgotten something?

What is the resistance measured in the coils in your case? On the 5V pad that I opened, there is an exclusive line for the Drmos. I'm thinking of cutting the line to at least see if the problem is on that side. Another possible suspect is a TVS diode that exists and I'm not sure it's good.

Good afternoon everyone. I measured the board again and I think I have narrowed it down to the problem.

Before the PWM U67000 there are 2 resistors.

                        R67002 (2.2 ohm and R67003 1 Kohm)

R67003 receives 5v and connects directly to ground.

Measuring R67003 it shows 887 ohm but if I measure between 5v and ground the resistance is 889 ohm.

This leads me to conclude that the ideal resistance of the 5v line would be 1 kohm on a board at 100% and that I have problems with the PWM or that the resistor R67003, being out of specifications, is causing the problems.

Another piece of information to add that I thought I hadn't mentioned yet was the fact that I measured 500 Ohms on the 5v connection right after I turned off the laptop and while the board was still hot.

Actually it is a good indication that in this particular case the low resistance on the 5V rail could be fine.

The resistor was a good find. regularly you will notice power rails or data lines measuring lower than the resistor connected to GND on the same rail and this can be usually considered being normal. Simple reason: A semiconductor has a lower resistance to GND on this track. It would be a strange coincidence that one of these has failed only slightly lower than the design resistance.

It is possible that it has nothing to do with the VRB_VDD5 and the CPU/Chipset "simply" suffers from degradation instead. A rabbit hole, even for the most experienced technicians.
