    Dell Latitude 9410 - LA-J541P - only 5V with USB-C

    Hello,
    I have a problem with Dell Latitude 9410 - LA-J541P v1.0. This laptop have 2 USB-C ports for charging.
This laptop had broken PD controller TPS65988 - it was heating up to 80 degrees. After changing it to new IC (2 new ones) I don't have 20V, only 5V from USB-C power supply. I checked USB-C ports and they are fine.
    TPS65988 voltages:
    VBUS/VBUS2 pin 13/14 - 5V
    PP_HV1/PP_HV2 pin 1/2/11/12 - 0V
    C1_CC1/C1_CC2 pin 24/26 - 1.7V from voltage divider

What does this IC require to change 5V to 20V?

    Thanks for help.

Firmware. This is a stand alone power delivery controller that must be fitted with firmware to communicate over the CCx pins (1-wire per side) with the power source (your USB-C adapter) to request the PD contracts and then this controller will select the best one to power your load = your laptop.

Where can I find that firmware? I don't have a second motherboard and I couldn't find it on the web.

See attached. From my quick review - this PD controller is blank (have not yet reviewed their evaluation board and will do so and update this post if there is additional information).

This blank PD controller operates with the I2C (SMBUS) and SPI interfaces.

The reference block diagram in their datasheet shows that the I2C bus (SMBUS) is used to configure this PD controller upon power up. Noting this, study if the I2C / SMBUS lines are properly working between the EC and this controller chip. Do the same for the SPI interface.

Measure their voltage to ground for each interface and post your measurements.

It is most likely the EC that is required to configure this PD controller with the firmware which will then negotiate the 20v PD contract.

The EC firmware must be working and suspecting either the EC has a local flash memory device with the firmware OR the main bios does this upon power up -> main bios boots and uses the PCH as the bus master to inject firmware into the EC and then the EC injects firmware into this PD controller.
