Changing BIOS Serial Number After Motherboard Replacement on EliteBook x360 G3

    Hello,

I have an EliteBook x360 G3 where I had to replace the motherboard. Everything is working fine and there are no errors during boot. However, I have the issue that the serial number in the BIOS is incorrect. When I run the DMI tool under Windows, I get an error stating that I am not in Unlocked Mode and therefore cannot make any changes. I was able to change the Asset Tag directly in the BIOS. Now I am wondering, can I simply read the BIOS chip, change the serial number with a hex editor, and write it back, or what other options do I have? The old motherboard did not work at all, so I disposed of it, which in hindsight might not have been very smart.

Do I have a way to change the serial number in the BIOS and also this born date? As far as I know, the DMI tools no longer work with newer devices. I found a YouTube video, but I don't know which tool is used there. He boots from a stick and was able to modify the data on a G9.

Maybe someone can help or give me a tip?

    I would appreciate it.

Easiest way is to obtain the HP DMI tool, create a bootable USB, unlock MPM and then update the serial number using the HP BIOS configuration utility (BCU). You lock the MPM again after you've finished the update, and you can do that from the HP BCU.

You could always dump your BIOS and upload to the BIOS group for someone to update your DMI data. But where is the fun in that?

Okay, I understand, but don't you need the SMC file from HP for that?
I have tried all the methods from the readme and I get the error that MPM is locked and I need to escalate through the UUID.
      How exactly does that work?

I guess I can only change this by reading the chip. Or is there a way to change my UUID to FFFFFFFFFFF?

Create a bootable USB MS-DOS disk with Rufus and copy the files from the HP NbDmiFit tool onto it (I think 2.13 is the most recent that has EFI support on it, 2.14 does not). If the system is supported, you can unlock the MPM when you boot this USB in UEFI mode. I have an Elitedesk 800 G4 on the bench, not supported on that. I don't know what tool unlocks Elitedesks. Replacement boards from HP come with the MPM unlocked BTW - not sure where in the BIOS specifically that needs to be changed but perhaps SMDFlea knows.

If it's not supported, I'm sure if you dump your BIOS with a programmer, someone in the BIOS group will unlock the MPM for you. Or update the serial etc.

Okay, I think the device is too new. The x360 G3 is roughly equivalent to the G5 in regular EliteBooks. It's from 2019.I booted from this EFI, but then I get the error that the MPM protocol is not present.I also can't change the data via BCU. Thanks for the help; I will upload my BIOS. Are both chips needed, or is the one on the board sufficient?
