Compaq CQ62 boot fan error, but fan still runs

    Hiya all,

Compaq CQ62 here which periodically reports a fan error on boot, even though the fan is running.

The exhaust is quite warm, certainly more than I'd expect; when running linux rescue I see the temps are 60~66'C, again, hotter than I'd expect.

I could replace the fan, that's not a big issue, but I'm half wondering if it migth be an issue with the drive circuitry for the fan (do they use full PWM control or just 50/100% control?).

    I would first update BIOS.

Make sure there is no dust in the case, and that there is good airflow throughout the case. Make sure the Fan is getting the proper voltage or PWM signal. Check to see what is getting very hot (processor?).

        Hi,

Change the fan. I have seen loads of these with the same fault, almost always the fan thats at fault, in fact i had a customer bring one in to me this morning with the exact same issue that you mention. I have ordered him a new fan.
