Asus A4L laptop

This machine was originally repaired here on Badcaps and a few months ago and my kids use it, after a really bad storm the LAN stopped working, 1 router and the ADSL modem were also fried at the same time.
I have not opened the machine since it works on a USB wireless stick but I'm curious to fined out what might need replacing if possible, the LAN and phone jack are located near the 2 USB connectors.
Any info appreciated.

does your new router have wireless security enabled especially the wireless access setting enabled or mac address restriction enabled.

Yes the wireless security is enabled although there is no restriction of the mac address, the LAN is DHCP enabled and a P4 is running fine next to it on the same router connected by eternet cable.
The A4L network adapter is working without any conflicts although in the XP network connections its listed as unplugged, swapped out the cable but still won't connect to the router.
I think there is some thing on the Mobo between the network interface and the ethernet connection short circuited like a fuse or cap?
