    Alienware m9700 video problems

    Hi There,

I have an Alienware m9700 laptop.

I recently upgraded the o/s from XP to Win 7 with no problems.

It had been running well until I launched IE 8. Almost immediately the entire went white. I then shut the machine down, restarted it and the screen was fine for a few seconds. The screen now had a 3" white stripe running vertically down the middle of the screen. Now when I reboot, the white stripe appears during the Alienware splash screen.

I'm inclined to think that this problem was not caused by IE 8, but I could be wrong.

I'm thinking that either the video card or the screen itself.

Is there anything I can do to test the machine?
Has anyone else had this problem?

    Many thanks

Plug in an external monitor - if the stripe has gone it could well be the LCD itself. If it's still present (or moved to another location on the external monitor) I'd think video chip or video RAM perhaps?

seems like the graphics card(s) die quite a lot in these systems. along with the motherboard, battery, LCD and HDD..
what a piece of cr.. err.. dell

try the external monitor. if it still does this, suspect the graphics card(s)

kinda sounds like the usual nvidia bad bump material disaster..
even worse that this system has 3 nvidia chips that could/will fail.. 2 GPUs and the nForce 4 chipset..
