hi! i've received a a1466 completely dead.

i've found water around u6101 and u1900

removed ics cleaned and soldered two other ic from donor board! all ok!


today i 've received again this laptop...dead...again

i've used some solder and flux on u6101 and again live!

BUT...

it is extremely slow i have to wait like 30 secondo to hear the sound and 10 second to see the logo since i push the power button

then system bar start to load but OS seems impossible to charge...

sometimes boot the os...i can insert the password but it hangs befor i can see the deskt

Cpu seems extremely hot even if i have changed the thermal paste

now i have tried to format the original ssd...but it is loading catalina from usb since like an hour!!!!


diagnostic test doesn't find anything...only "poor battery performance"

Fan speed is a good indication of throttling. If the fan is running flat out, it's because of missing sensor data.

The most common one is the trackpad or it's cable. A1466 do run a bit slow when battery is on 1%, but should run ok with it disconnected. SSD can also cause it but that's rare. No ASD for 165 boards, but you can use D from boot up to see if it reports an error.

Pay close attention to passives on these boards, these are the most common issues I find. Every dull or corroded looking end cap means that component has to come off to check the pad underneath. Often the pad disintegrates when the passive is removed, and often needs a jumper as that pad is on top of a via.

Problematic batteries considerably slows down A1466. Try disconnecting the battery and see if performance is ok.

diagnostic test with using "D" says no errors.

fan speed is normal....

it is still slow even with battery disconnected, using a power bench power supply

Try another SSD if you have one. I did have a system once that ran ultra slow and it was the SSD itself that was faulty.

with external ssd or another ssd same thing...

i don't understand why cpu is super hot and ssd and u3900 hot

You will need to run ASD not ‘D' to properly diagnose the logic board. Post the details of the ASD.

if i boot an ubuntu live from usb, it boot without problem and OS work well

Reinstall the MACOS on the internal SSD. It may be corrupt.

i've tried to reinstall OS on the original ssd...but the boot of usb was soooooo slow

so i've installed another ssd, i was able to boot the usb and install os...

but after i've installed all screw it has no boot anymore...

it's like a mistery!

for example, yesterday i've tried to boot from a preinstalled high sierra wxternal hard drive with no luck! but ubuntu boot without problem,..

Review the contacts of the SSD that is working. Confirm the socket is clean and without any corossion. Does not hurt to wipe the SSD contacts with a cotton Q-tip dipped in alcohol. Review to use without the SSD screw to see if that makes a difference. Perhaps you have a loose SSD connector or the SMD contacts are not all solid onto the PCB.

problem is that usb drive hangs at the end of loading bar....

with or without ssd!

Test with SMC bypass.

SMC bypass is a mode where several SMC features are disabled (sensors in particular), you disconnect all power, press power button, connect Magsafe and keep power button held for 5 to 10 seconds. Fans should go at max speed.

IIRC, the machine is throttled in SMC bypass. I never use it to be honest.

There is no ASD for 820-00165 boards unfortunately. I did see a post a few years back on someone who hacked the 820-3437 ASD to run on the later boards. There is a 3rd party alternative called HWSensors which might be helpful. Some of the readings can be a red herring so better to compare these to a working board first. If you are having trouble loading MAC OS, install it on another machine and transfer the SSD over to run HWSensors.

u6101 and u1900 corrosion:

u1900 is clock signal generator, and if something is wrong board will not post, so board posting means it's ok.

u6101 is bios chip replated. if something goes wrong here, it can give slow boot and so on.

best thing to do is flash clean me bios with original serial put back in it.

after that see if it still has slow boot problem.
u6101 are close to end of laptop, not middle so hard to say that some sensor got problem with water spill.
