Acer Nitro 5 An517-51 mainboard short circuit - Boomer needs help

    Laptop data:
    NTB Acer An517-51 FHD
    i7-9750H
16GB replaced with RAM Crucial Ballistix SODIMM DDR4-3200 32GB K2 SW
    1TB SSD
    RTX2060

Bon soir dear online techies, enthusiasts, modest helpers and whomever I might have forgotten!

Search gave me no hits so this is my first post.

My Acer 5 Nitro mainboard had a short circuit when I tried to plugin a USB device. Some smoke rose from the port and it became super hot a that point of entry/exit. Warranty was of about a month.
Since I am on a low budget I cannot afford to buy new and have to repair. But finding a new mainboard seems difficult till impossible online as well as with local dealers.

    Questions:
    A) If the mainboard is fried so are the RAM, graphics card etc.? How can this be tested without professional equipement?
    B) This page says that may board should be compatible with Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-54-70KK-US, AN515-54-728C-US, AN517-51-76V6-US) Series but I have not found any source to confirm that information?
    Source: http://www.ascendtech.us/acer-nitro-...?agent=froogle
    C) If these boards are not suitable what other boards can I use and how do I found out which one is compatible? E. g. could I get one like these AN517-51-56YW (https://www.m4l.com/NBQ5911003-Acer-System-Board) and just swap some parts with a bit of performance loss?

I am open to any kind of suggestions of what to do.

    Thanks a lot!

Does the logic board/laptop power up at all after this event?

The damaged component is likely a USB load switch that fuels the vbus power rail to the local USB connector. It is possible that this damaged USB load switch is halting the boot up process. Respectively, you will need some soldering tools to remove and replace this damaged part. At the very least a multimeter is required to take same measurements of the damaged region of the board.

      Hi. Thanks for your answer.

After waiting some time I tried booting it again. It booted for a few seconds and got super hot at that port again. It was the board on the small side-mainboard. Since then never ever again.

Any ideas on which other mainboard might be ok to use?

Is the area that was getting hot a removable daughter board?

Post pics of this board and USB daughter board.

If possible, disconnect this daughter board. If not clear on how to disconnect, wait for additional advice.

Hi. Thanks for your help so far.
New pictures attached since I cannot edit my initial post.

As far as I remember it was the small motherboard that got super hot when the circuit happened. I am not 100% certain on this.

I tried booting with and without the small board. With and without the battery. Combinations as well. Tried booting with only battery, only charger and both.

No reaction at all. No lights flashing.
When connecting the charger the adapter on the board gets a little bit warm so I guess it is charging.

This mb is too expensive and i strongly suggest to take it to a professional repair shop as you lack professional skills as well as tools.

Re: Acer Nitro 5 An517-51 mainboard short circuit - Boomer needs help

I will not do it myself but I seek advice what is wrong and if I can get another board like the ones linked in the first post since they are far cheaper than the original board.
My budget does not allow for a full recovery so I could live with some downgrades. The exchange will be done by a local technician.
