OST, Elite, and L-tec are suspect. KZE is reliable. OST, in particular, can fail without showing any signs of failure such as leaking or bloating.

In my experience - Asus made i865 boards are ridiculously fussy about memory. You may want to try several different brands of memory before you start tearing into the board.

Plug a speaker into the green sound port and listen to the post reporter for a error message to get you started. If no message remove the cmos battery and check to make sure its at least +3v, be sure its not powered on and the power is unplugged from the wall/PSU so the cmos gets cleared.

With that assortment of caps there's a good chance a recap will fix it.
Only ones I see worth keeping are the KZE.

            Re: P4P800 common fail?

I hope you're not using some junk power supply to run these boards.

Let me tell you a little about the "Adam" computer...

P4P800-E in a $20 ricer case built by some failure of a no0b. Adam ends up buying it from someone who originally bought it from the 'egghead.' The PS was a 'free with the case' LCB-450.

First thing I noticed was a slight burning odor from the PS exhaust and automagic fan control pushing too little air. Stupid LED case fans. More plastic in the case than metal, etc, etc...

For fun, I booted the OS before FDISKing and formatting/resintalling. What a heap! It was XP home, but apparently it was D/L'd from a phreaking site and was being pushed as 'Vista.' Some jackass modified it in such a way as to be able to type over any place XP would normally be displayed! Any place you'd find the Windows version on this installation, you'd see the same as in my little example.

I thought I'd get the reinstall done before replacing the PS. Sort of- the formatting and OS install went fine. Now that we'd be pushing the video card a little, I opened it up and directed a fan inside the case. Drivers went fine. I even got most of the apps in, but I noticed some 'squealing' from the VRM, and HDD and fan motors. The switching freq from the VRM was modulating with the ripple coming out of the PS to produce mixing products that were audible everywhere! Right before I had enough of this insanity, I applied some settings in MSCONFIG. I was serenaded with the squeal-symphony. Just as I went to unplug it, the settings applied and winderz shut down.

I took that Deer junk and ripped it the hell outta there. And took it 'downstairs,' where it 'got taught.' I put an FSP350-60PN in there and it came right back. Memtest even made it overnight. I reinstalled again, not wanting to have any chance of data, while in RAM for instance, being corrupted from power problems. I know the RAM has its own buck converter, but wanted to be 'safe' . Got it done, back together and outta here.

A week later, it was back. While trying to boot, a nightmare resembling a Win3.1 crash made itself apparent. I'm pretty sure the chipset cooked slowly on the Deer supply before I got it. It finally went the week after it left. It would POST, you could even enter the BIOS. Just not make it into Windows. It would boot and almost get to the desktop, but would completely freeze up. No pointer movement, no numlock/capslock on/off and no beeping if keys held down.

The same HDD made it on another system. It just had driver issues, as the board I tried it on was completely different.

Yes- the hard drive survived! After all that abuse...

A Gateway P3 700MHz became his system for the time- this was in 2007.

There's no way I'd buy one of those FSPs today. All the power supplies we have here are refurbished/rewired/recapped OEM supplies. No glue, no cheap caps.

Except for the 'Asus issues' (ask Bonez), that board was nice for its time. I shared that story with the hopes that it would save _anyone_ else from the same grief.
