Wireless and powerline networking product warnings

I think wireless and powerline networking products should have a warning that this product should only be used to supplement your wiring dedicated to networking, and should not be used to replace your wiring dedicated to networking.

As far as we know, nothing beats wired networks on dedicated wiring.

My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

Why? They aren't designed to supplement, they are designed to be used instead of wired connections where wired is impractical etc.

Although, only an idiot would use them to replace an existing and working wired network.

I would be weary about how much intereference they can stand from other equipment like X10 modules which also communicate over the same lines.

Great idea. I filed it under DGAF along with politics and my mom's nagging.

Id say that's common sence to a degree. How many server rooms have you been inside that use wifi? Im 0 for 13. But there are situations where wireless is the only way to go. I worked on a small methane server farm that used some proprietary wireless comunication to poll the wells while everything else was hardline in the office. I've also worked on POS systems that were a mix of hardlined permanant instalations and wifi mobile stations, and most of these were put together by average joes. OTOH I worked on a network that was almost completely wifi because the three offices were so far apart and were seperated by a creek. Underground wouldn't work due to flooding and shifting of the banks and the fact that the idiots there always are hitting the water or sewer lines underground and being a guest ranch overhead was deemed an eyesore. Being in a remote location was the only reason it worked without interference and I had to use multiple channels to limit overloading and congestion from bumping off the long haul links. Then again I've always been a wifi guru of sorts but I also know it has limits.

OTOH it would be a good idea if endpoint devices that were lag sensitive carried some sort of warning for example gaming consoles. Then we wouldn't have all these kids whineing that they lath or get dropped from halo matches, but microsoft would have to admit that their wifi adaptor isn't such a good idea afterall....

I can only speak for myself but I only use WiFi when I have to, other than that I have Cat5e running all over my house...
