• Re: Soldering Iron: Cheap temperature control?

Yes it will work if your dimmer is grunts enough. I haven't done it myself but I have seen others that have. One guy used a made in china no name and it melted, but a good friend used I believe a GE or something brand and it works wonderfully. As stated above its basically a pwm circuit. Basically it varies when it turns power on furring the rise of the sinewave and conducts till it hits the zero crossing point. IIR the lowest most dimmers go is 50% duty cycle but due to low voltage at the end it will result in a bit more than 50% power...

  • Re: Miracle self-healing?

Your garage is on an ancient indian holy site resulting in miraculous repairs. Your house on the other hand is cursed. Then again I've had the same luck with stuff in storage. Like a pioneer amp. Blew 3 under warranty and they refused repairs on the third so I threw it in storage for a couple years and now it works like new. So I agree there's something to the idea of giving electronics a rest and them comming back to life

  • blown channel on a rockford amp

I have a 4040dsm amp with a blown channel. 1, 2, and 4you work but 3 is dead as a doornail. Opened it up and no visually bad components. Any ideas on how to start testing it? I suspect its part of the output section that's bad, but this is the first electronics I've tried to repair without something obvious being bad. Thanks and ill post ia pic later

  • Re: Whats B standing for?

Pics plz or something? Wire in a ferrite could be anything. It could be house marking for seize or it could be "A" half and "B" half. But without more info saying its an engine would even qualify as a good guess

  • Re: More memory or less memory than speed?

Osx is 64 bit so you can use more than 4gb ram, but as others said WILL you use that much? So the long answer is it depends on what you do. Gaming, faster ram will help, browsing the entire internet or working with large files, as much ram as you can stuff in it. But if your that worried about it get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231351 and buy as Manny as it will hold. (Note I can't get the compatibility wizard to run on my phone so double check to make sure its compatible)Re: More memory or less memory

  • Re: Cleaning Motherboards - ATTN SMOKERS!!

Personally I use awesome brand cleaner. Get it at the dollar store, can't beet a 32oz bottle for $1! Had a van once that looked lime someone rebuilt the motor on the back seat, 2 bottles of awesome latter and the interior was spotless. Also fyi pc boards almost all get a bath in a dishwasher of some form, usually a continues feed but I read of some upstart using standard maytags from home depot.

As a side note bugs in general seem to love computers. Had a huge ass moth take out my thermaltake xblower.

  • Re: Replaced bad caps, still having problems

Pcbonez you have it backwards, he had 1200 if and ratshack sold him 2200uf caps.

But everything else bonez said is right. Between the higher esr and higher capacity it probably detuned the circuit so bad it wont cycle properly. Post the brand and series of the caps and we can steer you in the right direction.

  • Re: Are these Dells any good?

C2d is a current processor so that price is ok but more than id pay in my market. The amount of ram and video card type would be the deciding factor. More than 2gbid of ram and a nvidia 7 series or higher cpu and id go for it

  • Re: What can you actually mod in a PSU besides caps?

That's why im planning on doing all copper for everything when I finally go wc. Copper water blocks, copper radiator, and a combination of solid and soft copper tubing, all brazed together. But that will make it a pain in th a** to change stuff. I can't really think of anything that would contaminate the oil enough to cause a short, other than a ton of caps blowing but IMHO you would have stability issues before it was causing a short.

  • Re: wrt54gs v2 whineing

Figured the tracon caps out. 2a is voltage in number of zeros, so 100v, 224 is capacitence in pictofarads with the third digit being the number of zeros, so in this case .22uf. K is the series but I've not found anything out about what it means. Anyways these deffinately wont work. Thanks for the links kc, im assumeing I test to see which caps have what voltage and use the poly with the higher voltage where I have to and use the 4v ones where I can for better ripple. Just want to double check, you know you make an ASS-u-ME if you end up being wrong. Than...

  • Re: Dell Dimension 8400 V-Core caps

Please don't try using drill bits except for a last resort! Try using a hair dryer or heatgun (on low and very carefully) to preheat the board. My general rule is hot but not so hot you can't hold onto it. And I've never burnt a board yet but I also haven't ever replaced capacitors, just power jacks and stuff where there's less copper to a degree.

My phone isn't wanting to let me upload but here's a random pic of the same board http://img392.*************/img392/7146/dscn9874smallix4.jpg the only difference is I used bigger heatsinks I cut up from a p3.

Im looking to get this up and running again as cheap as I can, and looking around I have 1 nichicon 470uf50v vr(m) 1 nichicon 220uf50v vr(m) and a ton of green caps labled "tracon 2a474k" and "tracon 2a224k" which I believe are polyester film. Any of these work if you think I need a recap? Im having no luck...

  • Re: Wireless Router only works 'Wired'

Caps just wernt big enough to handle the voltage spike or good enough esr. their hardware is so basic I've never had issues with it so I always say software. Ran a city wide wifi off a bunch and never had stability issues after we went ddwrt, other than the white collars scrapping it after we had everything running smooth

  • Re: Finished recapping Rosewill NIC (4 months later)

Rosewill = shit. Realtek is ok,other than you have crabs all over in your computer :P that's what I've ran for years, and yes a realtek card is a hair faster than a compairible intel card. That heatsink is a bit overkill but atleast it hides your crabs! Lol

  • wrt54gs v2 whineing

I have a wrt54gs v2 that's recently started whineing near the inductors/capacitors but im unable to locate the exact source. I was wondering if maybe one of the hermei caps were blown without bulging and if I could replace them with what I have laying around. Hermei caps are 220uf 25v ht series and I have some nichicon 220uf 50v and a 470uf 50v all vr(m). This thing is heatsinked fanned overclocked and tx boosted so im really pushing the power designed of the board.

Ps the whineing just started a couple months ago with no hardware or settings changes in over a year. Its running...

  • Re: What can you actually mod in a PSU besides caps?

Don't forget sleeving the cables, buliding a plexi case, getting heatsinks anodized to match case theme, larger quieter fans, and I've even heard of replacing the heatsinks with waterblocks and eliminating the fan alltogether, although I reccomend leaving a fan there to cool the caps and whatnot that you can't heatsink. Come to think of it I saw somewhere someone built a water cooled plexi case filled with transformer oil and mounted it in the front drive bays. He used a small grunty high torque 40mm fan to circulate the oil which...
