    CCFL thick and thin wires

Every CCFL I have seen so far has one thick colored wire (pink or blue) and one thin wire (black or white). What does this color code indicate? Some of the plugs/sockets are keyed, but others are not and so the wire with the thicker insulation can go in on either side. Is it that one side of the output of these inverters is near or at ground, and the other is at the full voltage, with the thicker insulation on the higher voltage side? That would make sense, but why then are not the sockets keyed, or even marked, so that the high voltage wire would be relaibly plugged into the high voltage side of the socket?

The thicker wire is more heavily insulated. It can carry 1000 volts or more. The thinner wire is the return line, and carries less than 10 volts.

A good practice is to note which wire went to each connector as you disassemble the inverter. Someone who looks at a monitor I have repaired might notice 'pink' or 'blue' written in pencil near each socket.

For a number of reasons, both health and personal, I will no longer be active on this board. Any PMs asking for assistance will be ignored.

OK. Why is it always pink and blue on the thick, and black and white on the thin? It looks like some sort of standard code but for what? Do the colors say something about bulb position? I mean, electrically they are all the same, so why a different color combination for each bulb? The inverter sockets do not seem to be marked on the board as to which side is the return. One of the Dells I took apart had colored pen on the plugs to show which side was up, but the other Dell and the Tyris didn't.

I do note the positions of the plugs before disassembly - but that won't tell me if the thing was wired backwards at the factory.

They won't survive that much if they were, I guess.
