I received an e-mail from Viewsonic today with an access PW to their customer ftp site containing the service manual for my model.
From a quick scroll through the document it appears "stj" was spot on. Screws are hidden behind the stand.

btw, a lot of vewsonic & other manuals are on 500,000 russian & polish websites!

it's a safe place - they wont get sued!
just like hosting software on chinese servers!
